The Department of Justice’s investigation into E. Jean Carroll is a public example of the threats, intimidation, and dismissal survivors often face when disclosing abuse and pursuing accountability.

Even after two jury trials validated her account, E. Jean Carroll is still frequently described as the woman who “accused” Donald Trump. In our most recent blog, VRLC Executive Director Stacy Malone and Deputy Director of External Affairs Amanda Walsh wonder, “At what point does she become the woman who was sexually abused by Donald Trump?”

We stand with E. Jean Carroll, just as she has stood with survivors and supported our work at VRLC.

VRLC Executive Director Stacy Malone recently discussed the devastating impact that continually delayed federal funding is having on domestic and sexual violence survivor services across the country with The 19th.

The publication contacted more than 250 organizations and municipalities that previously received funding from the Office on Violence Against Women. The 48 that responded described layoffs, reduced survivor services, and voluntary pay cuts just to keep critical programs running. Most organizations declined to speak publicly out of fear of retaliation from the current administration.

If federal funding runs out by September 30, Stacy explained, VRLC may no longer be able to fully support attorneys representing K-12 students who have experienced sexual violence.

“I know it’s hard for some people to imagine that a 12-year-old needs their own lawyer, but if they’ve been sexually assaulted by a classmate, and they want to stay safely in school, they need someone to advocate for them,” she said.

Survivors deserve consistent, fully funded support, and the organizations serving them require access to these stalled federal resources to continue their lifesaving work.

VRLC recently wrapped up another round of training with OVW Legal Assistance for Victims programs.

We were honored to spend time with attorneys from across the country who brought so much care and commitment to the space. There is something special about being surrounded by colleagues who understand both the weight and the joy of this work.

VRLC needs your voice to help prevent catastrophic consequences for survivors across the state! We are facing a devastating $500,000 cut to our Massachusetts legal services funding, putting critical legal support for hundreds of sexual assault survivors at risk.

This half-million dollar cut would leave over 300 sexual assault survivors without access to critical legal services - and that’s just this year!

The Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance (MOVA) has proposed a solution: The TRUST Fund, a permanent line item in the state budget that would help sustain victim services and protect survivor support programs statewide.

Senate budget debate began this week. There is still time to let your senators know that we must preserve survivors' services!

🚨Call your senators and ask them to cosponsor amendment #240 and ask Senate leadership to build amendment #240 into the final budget to support MOVA’s TRUST Line.

🚨Engage with media. Press releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, and contacting local media outlets about impacts of grant cuts is a great way to spread the word on the urgent need for a state investment.

VRLC is facing a devastating $500,000 cut to our Massachusetts legal services funding. Hundreds of sexual assault survivors could lose access to critical legal support.

But there’s still time to act. The Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance (MOVA) has proposed The TRUST Fund, a permanent line item in the state budget that would help preserve funding and protect survivor services. We need your help to make sure it passes.

We urge all Massachusetts residents to contact their state Senators TODAY and ask them to cosponsor amendment #240 — The TRUST Line.

VRLC Executive Director Stacy Malone breaks down what these cuts would mean and shares resources for contacting your representatives and voicing your support in our latest blog here: tinyurl.com/VRLCBlog

The House’s recent passing of the Survivor Justice Tax Prevention Act (H.R. 2347) is an important step in ensuring that survivors of sexual violence are not taxed on the justice they receive.

“This bill affirms that the harm a survivor endured is no less real simply because it may not leave a visible injury, “ VRLC Deputy Director of External Affairs Amanda Walsh said. “We applaud the effort to close the gap in the tax code and to give sexual assault survivors the clarity and peace of mind they need to heal and move forward.”

As the bill now goes to the Senate, we urge lawmakers will continue to support this critical protection for survivors. Survivors deserve access to justice without financial penalty.
