“If I were you, I'd be like this. If it was me, I'd do this,” are statements made by well intentioned narcissistic parents who mistake their child's identity for their own. The denial of the child's autonomy for a false sense of security takes effect: If only the parent could retain control of the child, the child could be who the parent would have liked to be.

Parents who give up living their full potential, who stop trying new things or making new goals inevitably transfer their wishful thoughts about themselves onto their children. This causes parental possession known as parental imago which perpetuates the narcissistic identity disorder.

This is essentially a sort of curse because a parent is only as good as he or she is actually good on their own. Instead of working on themselves, they work on the child. This becomes the child's greatest burden because they can only be who they are. To become the parent is a form of possession by the parent.

Carl Jung said "The greatest burden a chid must bear is the unlived life of it's parents".
