The Law Offices of James D. Butler Business Attorney, Mediator, Arbitrator James D. Butler has twenty-five years’ experience representing clients in a variety of business and personal matters.

These matters include the formation, funding, sale and acquisition of partnerships, limited liability companies and other corporate entities, workouts/bankruptcy, commercial finance, construction, employment agreements, real estate, sports and entertainment, and private aviation. Mr. Butler directs and oversees all litigation matters for a national trade association. Utilizing this wealth of experience, Mr. Butler has developed a speciality serving as both a mediator and arbitrator in a variety of adr settings. Butler has been selected to serve on the mediation rosters of the Circuit Courts of Montgomery County, Prince George’s County and Howard County, Maryland, respectively, as well the roster for the District Court of Maryland’s “Day of Trial” program, the District of Columbia’s Foreclosure Mediation Program and Montgomery County’s Office of Human Rights’ “Discrimination Complaint Mediation Program.” Mr. Butler also serves on the roster of arbitrators for FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority). Butler is a member of the American Bar Association’s Dispute Resolution Section and the Maryland Program for Mediator Excellence. Butler's business clients run the gamut from Fortune 50 companies to small and medium-sized businesses, from major universities to professional athletes, and from institutional lenders to small business entrepreneurs. Butler established The Law Offices of James D. Butler in 1992. Before launching his legal practice, Mr. Butler was an associate attorney for six years with the prestigious law firm of Arnold & Porter in Washington, D.C., and served as law clerk for Bernard M. Decker, Senior Judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (Chicago). In his position as the sole law clerk for Judge Decker, Mr. Butler drafted opinions in cases dealing with complex business disputes, lender liability, construction disputes, general contract disputes, legal malpractice and fee disputes, age, race and sex discrimination claims, civil rights violations, etc. Further, through the fine example of Judge Decker, Mr. Butler well understands the judicial temperament that must be brought by a neutral to any and every adr proceeding. Butler is a cm laude graduate of the University of Chicago Law School. He also earned a Master of Science degree in Government from the London School of Economics (awarded with highest distinction) and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colorado College (awarded summa cm laude). Butler was honored to be selected as a semifinalist for both the Rhodes Scholarship and the Truman Congressional Scholarship. Butler’s experience provides him with a firm understanding of the meaning and importance of concepts that are at the heart of many adr matters, e.g., legal definitions of “cause,” liability standards such as negligence and gross negligence, performance standards, insurance coverage, and the like. In sum, as a successful attorney with twenty-five years’ experience and the highest peer rating, a federal judicial clerk and a successful entrepreneur, Mr. Butler is uniquely qualified to bring both sophisticated legal acumen and practical understanding to his service as an advocate and as a neutral.
