Impacts of the Pandemic on Immigrant Detention Centers
The pandemic has put detained migrants and detention center staff in an especially precarious situation. GYH interns Arryonna Santos and Maryanne Koussa detail the severity of the COVID-19 situation for those detained and working in these controversial environments. At one center in Arizona, half of all employees have tested positive and the staff shortage is leading to inhumane living conditions for migrants on top of the already heightened risk of contracting the virus. Deceptive Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) policies have also been determined responsible for worsening the spread of the virus globally, as it deported immigrants who had been detained in these high-risk environments.

Senior Attorney Adriana Robinson explains these concerning new regulations.

Breaking News: In-State Tuition for VA Students Regardless of Immigration Status
Breaking News: Students will soon be able to pay in-state tuition at Virginia universities regardless of immigration status. Currently, undocumented students, and some with pending applications for legal status, do not qualify for in-state tuition. The higher out-of-state tuition often makes college unaffordable for these students, many of whom spent most of their lives in the state. Today the VA legislature announced, effective July 1, students can establish domicile in VA regardless of immigration status if they meet four requirements. Adriana Robinson elaborates on this great news from The Commonwealth of Virginia.

Lawsuit says CARES Act Discriminates against Undocumented Immigrants
COVID-19 FAQ: GYH Attorney Elana Gold sheds light on a new lawsuit challenging part of the Coronavirus aid package on the basis that it discriminates against undocumented parents and their families. Typically, under the aid package, parents qualify for $500 per dependent. However, the CARES Act prohibits payments to parents who file taxes using ITINs, which generally are used by undocumented immigrants, regardless of whether the children are themselves U.S. citizens. We support the argument of Georgetown Law's Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection (ICAP), and CASA that Federal aid should be shared with all taxpayers regardless of immigration status.

GYH Managing Partners Sandra Grossman and Becki Young break it down and explain who it does and does not cover, how it does nothing to make us safer or strengthen the economy, and how it is another log on the anti-immigrant fire and a thinly-veiled distraction from the lack of effective leadership to actually combat the Coronavirus.
