Without a plan, the law decides.
When someone dies without a properly prepared estate plan, their wishes don’t get to simply fill in the blanks.
Instead, state law determines how certain assets are handled and who may have a right to inherit them.
That can mean:
• Assets going to someone you didn’t intend to benefit
• Family members receiving property in ways you never would have chosen
• Children or other loved ones inheriting outright when you would have preferred protection or oversight
• Decisions becoming more complicated when there are blended families, minor children, or special circumstances
• Your family having to navigate a legal process during an already difficult time
And even having a will doesn’t necessarily answer every estate-planning question.
Your estate plan should reflect your decisions—not simply the default rules that apply when you haven’t made them.
If you’ve never made a plan, or your plan hasn’t been reviewed in years, it may be time to make sure your wishes are actually clear.
