Eewww, David!

Have a chuckle, and have a safe and happy weekend.

As just an FYI, we CAN, in fact, be at 8:00 am Bond Court on Monday Morning should this advice not be heeded.

ATTY. JONATHAN LEWIS LISTED BY THOMSON REUTERS AS A 2026 SUPER LAWYER RISING STAR

May 11, 2026
Beaufort, SC

The Law Firm of Jonathan Lewis, LLC is proud to announce that Jonathan Lewis, the Firm’s Principal Attorney, has been selected to the Super Lawyers South Carolina Rising Stars list in the 2026 Super Lawyers Magazine, his third consecutive year receiving this honor!

Each year, no more than 2.5 percent of the lawyers in the state are selected by the research team at Super Lawyers to receive this honor. Eligible attorneys must be under the age of forty, and/or in practice for less than ten years. Jonathan was selected by the research team at Thomson Reuters based upon peer nominations, independent research, and a review by attorneys in the same practice areas.

Super Lawyers is a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The annual selections are made using a patented multiphase process that includes a statewide survey of lawyers, an independent research evaluation of candidates and peer reviews by practice area. The result is a credible, comprehensive and diverse listing of exceptional attorneys. The Super Lawyers lists are published nationwide in Super Lawyers magazines and in leading city and regional magazines and newspapers across the country. Super Lawyers magazines also feature editorial profiles of attorneys who embody excellence in the practice of law. For more information about Super Lawyers, visit SuperLawyers.com.

Congratulations Jonathan!

To all who work in criminal justice, from the lawyers and solicitors, to the probation agents, court clerks, and judges, this is not surprising.

In South Carolina, mental health is not a priority, nor is treatment for mental illness. The result of this neglect by our legislature and State Dept. of Mental Health has deadly consequences for victims and defendants alike, and this crisis continues to grow and fester.

Detention Facilities and the South Carolina Department of Corrections are not equipped nor qualified to be the mental health treatment that so many defendants need.

It's long past time for the South Carolina Legislature and elected officials to address this quiet crisis.

Some inmates with mental illness refused treatment, pushing them closer toward crisis. They ate their own waste, destroyed their cells, screamed through the night and declined food and water. Some didn't survive.

"But, why would someone ever confess to something that they didn't do?!?!"

Because how the police interrogate you is as important as the substance they are discussing with you. It happens every single day, and we as a society are finding it more and more.

If Prof. Paul Heaton, renowned criminologist and expert in law enforcement interrogations, can convince a computer with the sum of the world's locatable information at its disposal, and complete and total knowledge of the architecture of what it can and cannot do, to confess to a crime it didn't commit, law enforcement can certainly produce one from the average person.

“ChatGPT lacks many of the vulnerabilities that make people more likely to falsely confess — like stress, fatigue, and sleep deprivation. If ChatGPT can be induced into a false confession, then who isn’t vulnerable?”
Prof. Emeritus Saul Kassin
John Jay College of Criminal Justice

"Attorneys and Experience You Can Count On, When It Matters Most."

A renowned criminologist’s experiment with ChatGPT demonstrates the destructive power of police to elicit false confessions.

MEET OUR TEAM

Jake Owens, Law Clerk

Jake is a law student at the University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law, where he is currently finishing his first-year. As a lifelong South Carolina resident hailing from the Lowcountry, Jake is deeply committed to serving the community he proudly calls home, and all of the citizens of the Palmetto State.

His legal interest and focus lies in criminal defense, where he is driven by his desire to advocate for his neighbors and the members of his community. Jake understands that the constitutional right to a fair trial demands that legal professionals provide the highest quality of representation to every person that they appear with, no matter what they stand accused of by the State or Government.

When Jake is not in the law library or in the office he is either in the marshes or woods of the State, pursuing his passions for hunting and fishing.

Former NYPD sergeant Erik Duran was convicted of manslaughter after throwing a cooler that caused the 2023 death of Eric Duprey.

“I took this job to save lives. I felt terrible once I saw Eric Duprey crash,” Duran told the court during sentencing, saying he “did everything he could” to attend to the man’s injuries.
