Most homeowners qualify for at least one program that lowers their property tax bill, and most never apply for any of them 😥

Homestead exemptions, senior freezes, veteran exemptions, circuit breakers; these aren't loopholes, they're programs built specifically for you.

The catch is they don't kick in automatically, and they all have deadlines.

If you've never checked what you qualify for, this is the sign.

Your assessed value and your home's market value are not the same number, and that difference is what determines whether you're overpaying on property taxes.

The county assigns your assessed value once a year and uses it to calculate your bill.

If that number is too high, you're overpaying, and they're not going to flag it for you 👀

That's the number Ownwell reviews, challenges, and fights to correct.

🇺🇸 Your property taxes went up and you didn't change a thing. That's not a mistake, that's how the system works.

Every year, the county updates property values based on the market. If prices rose in your area, your assessment can go up even if you didn't touch a single wall. Higher assessment, higher bill.

The catch: the county's math isn't always right.

Properties get overvalued all the time, especially in areas where prices shot up fast and then leveled off.

If your bill went up and you don't know why, that's already reason enough to check your assessment.

Most property tax appeals don't fail because the case was weak…

They fail because of easily avoidable mistakes before you even walk in the door.

Missing deadlines, using Zillow as evidence, arguing about tax rates instead of assessed value, the board has heard it all, and none of it moves the needle.

If you've ever tried to appeal and lost, one of these 8 mistakes probably killed your case.
