Today is Wednesday, October 2nd. Today is also WRONGFUL CONVICTION DAY, the annual international observance committed to ending wrongful convictions and shining a light on the plight of those convicted of crimes they did not commit.

This year, students across the state of Georgia will hear from experts in our field and those who were wrongfully convicted and later exonerated. They will learn about the frailty of life and how and why wrongful convictions actually happen. More importantly, these precious minds will learn how wrongful convictions can be prevented.

TODAY, I implore you to invest some time to thinking about and discussing the negative impacts that human factors have in our justice system. These factors include, but are certainly not limited to, implicit bias and memory malleability.

Truthfully, we are all inclined to biases and errors. But for some these errors, especially within the confines of our criminal justice system, have catastrophic consequences.

It is only through awareness and commitment to change that humanity can improve. This happens in our government houses, our courthouses, our school houses and the houses we live in.
