**GEORGIA EVAL AND REEVAL TIMELINES**

TL;DR: 🕐 GA schools have 60 calendar days after you sign consent to complete your child's initial special ed evaluation. School breaks/summer can pause that clock (with an exception, if you consent 30+ days before school ends). Reevals don't follow this 60-day rule but the discussion about whether or not to conduct reevaluations must happen at least every 3 years. Put your requests in writing & follow up weekly. 👇 Full breakdown below.

📋 INITIAL EVALS IN GEORGIA

Initial special education evaluations in GA must be completed within 60 calendar days after the district receives signed parental consent for the evaluation.

⚠️ HOWEVER, Georgia excludes certain periods from those 60 days:

(a) Holiday/other breaks when students are out for 5+ consecutive school days, including contiguous weekends

(b) Summer vacation periods

➡️ So an initial evaluation can take MORE than 60 actual calendar days.

📌 Important exception: If parental consent is received 30+ days before the end of the school year, the evaluation must still be completed within the 60-calendar-day timeframe.

🔄 REEVALUATIONS

The 60-day rule applies to INITIAL evaluations only! Not reevaluations. But reevaluations have their own rules:

A redetermination decision (when the IEP team has to redetermine special education eligibility) happens at least every 3 years, when the IEP team meets to decide if another reevaluation is needed - this is for purposes of redetermining your child's eligibility for an IEP.

Evaluation procedures/consent requirements still apply to redetermination reevaluations, just not the 60-day clock like with initial evaluations.

A reevaluation (for ANY reason, not just the redetermination decision that happens every three years) can happen sooner than 3 years if the district or parent requests one, such as when new concerns arise.

💡 PARENT TIP

Put your evaluation request in an email to the special education director and school principal, and copy your child's teacher(s). Ask them to confirm receipt. Follow up weekly until you get a response, consent paperwork, or a meeting date.

FOCUS Equipment Grants cover certain types of equipment not covered by private insurance or Medicaid.

FOCUS provides grants for the following types of equipment:
🎯 Van lifts, ramps, behind the vehicle lift systems
🎯 Transport style wheelchairs as a manual backup (ex. Convaid)
🎯 Activity chairs (ex. Tumbleform, Special Tomato, Rifton)
🎯 Materials for ramps for home access (Installation not funded)
