Bidding Wars Starting Up Again? Would-be homebuyers are coming out of hibernation, preparing to strike a deal before competition heats up. The volume of applications for a mortgage increased 9.9% for the week ending Jan. 10. Some activity was driven by purchase applications, which increased 6% from the previous week, as buyers capitalized on the year-end decline in rates and a slight boost in inventory levels. Are bidding wars upon us again?

Mortgage rates declined throughout December, luring more buyers back to the market. They're competing over stubbornly low inventory.
