John Singleton's daughter disputes that he's in a coma

Every adult (age 18 and older) should have financial and medical power of attorney documents, at a minimum. If you know a group of people, church, organization, etc. that would benefit from a free seminar on the importance of estate planning, I would be more than happy to present to them. It is unnecessary for a family to feud over who should make medical and financial decisions in the event a loved one is incapacitated.

John Singleton's daughter is disputing that the "Boyz N the Hood" director is in a coma. Cleopatra Singleton said in a court filing Friday that her father is sedated but has been responding to stimuli and smiling and is recovering after an April 17 stroke. Cleopatra Singleton says her father's mothe...

Attorney: Aretha Franklin's estate paid $3M in back taxes

Aretha Franklin’s financial business would not be known to the public if she had a properly prepared estate plan. Anyone (no matter financial status) who dies without estate planning documents runs the risk of having their financial business made public.

Attorney for the Queen of Soul's estate disputes federal tax debt of more than $6.3 million, says the estate has paid at least $3 million.

Avoid The Estate-Planning Mistakes Of Aretha Franklin And Prince

"Sadly, many Americans don’t have a will or a living trust. A 2017 survey by Caring.com found that only 4 in 10 adults do. A striking 64% of Gen Xers and 42% of boomers don’t have a will, the study noted. The top reason for not taking these fairly simple estate-planning steps, according to survey respondents: they 'hadn’t gotten around to it'"

Aretha Franklin left no will or trust, attorney says

Aretha failed to plan for herself even though she was the personal representative for her father's estate, her sister's estate, and her brother's estate.

The singer's estate will likely be hammered out in probate court in Oakland County.

How Anthony Bourdain's Estate Plan Reflected The Two Most Important Parts Of His Life

"Caring.com found that 60% of all Americans don’t have an estate plan. For Gen X and Millennials, currently in their child-rearing years, the numbers are even higher at 64% and 78%, respectively."

Let me repeat the second sentence: "For Gen X and Millennials, currently in their child-rearing years, the numbers are even higher at 64% and 78%, respectively."

Now, I believe (based on the fact that he had a will and provided for his airline points) that Mr. Bourdain sought legal counsel and had a trust and/or non-probatable assets. Most likely, assets passed to his daughter via a trust and no one actually knows what those were or how much they were worth. The only info we can get is what passed via a will.....in probate court (and therefore, public).

Anthony Bourdain has been widely mourned in light of his untimely passing. The recent filing of his will has been a headline in the press. However, his estate plan reflects two interesting aspects of the man and what he truly valued.

You Have a Will – Is It Time for an Estate Plan?

An estate plan takes your will a step further to account for more than just your possessions. It provides clarity to your estate and can help head off potential future family battles.

It's graduation season! Do you have a college aged child? Do they have powers of attorney in place? In the absence of powers of attorney, if your child is in an accident or becomes incapacitated, even temporarily, you may need to petition the court to make medical decisions or handle their finances. It does not matter if you pay their tuition or they are on your medical insurance. Accidents happen and young people do become ill.......these documents can save you and your family time, money, aggravation, and stress. You never know what can happen.

Have you ever talked to your parents about their estate plan? If not, have you considered having a chat with them and don't know where to start?

Some conversation starters include:
1. Have you identified who should make your healthcare decisions if you can't?
2. If you are incapacitated, who has access to your assets to ensure your expenses are paid?
3. Do you have a will or a trust and where is it located?

Do you have examples of other friends and family that you can use to start the conversation?

I found an ebook that really helps in starting a discussion with your spouse, parents, and children. You can enter your email and it will be sent to you. Check it out!

Estate Planning For Millennials: The Key To Black Wealth

Following up on my previous post.......if your parents do not have a plan, you should be starting the conversation. If you do not have a plan and you have children and/or property, you are doing your family a disservice.

“Whether your estate is worth $100,000 or $100 million,” Douglass asserts, “the planning is critical, not just for wealth building, but to maintain family harmony, to administer the estate effectively and efficiently to save on costs and attorney’s fees.”

http://www.blackenterprise.com/estate-planning-for-millennials/

Estate planning for millennials sounds counter intuitive. However, before you jump to that conclusion, consider this: No matter how much money you make in your lifetime, it’s not real wealth if you don’t effectively transfer it to future generations.
