Michigan Law Workers' Rights Clinic

Michigan Law Workers' Rights Clinic The WRC is a free legal clinic staffed by law students providing unemployment insurance representation to Michigan workers. We are not the UIA.

If you have a COVID-19 related claim and have reached out, we ask for your patience as we respond. 1st year law students, under the supervision of an experienced attorney, receive course credit to provide free Unemployment Insurance advice and representation to UI claimants. We provide not only a practical experience opportunity for students to develop real world advocacy skills but also an opportunity for them to engage their community in significant and meaningful ways. Please note we are not affiliated with the State of Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA).

Mission: Our mission is to engage law students to bring justice to those in need in their community. We do this by operating a free law school clinic in which law students provide free Unemployment Insurance (UI) advice and advocacy for area unemployed Michiganders. Originally established in 2010 as the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Project (MiUI), we operated as an independent student pro bono project until Fall 2014 when we were brought in house at the Michigan Law as a clinic.

Michigan unemployment system designed to slow payments working all too well

Michigan's UI system's biggest barrier to functioning well? It's own software. @UMichLaw Prof. @RachaelKohl described it as "the biggest barrier to Michiganders getting benefits — both historically since 2013 and right now during COVID-19,"

Michigan overhauled its unemployment insurance system nearly a decade ago to save money, root out fraud and make it harder for jobless workers to qualify for benefits. Now, with more than one million workers jobless, the state has flagged 1 in 3 claimants for fraud amid the coronavirus pandemic.

If Congress doesn’t #Savethe600 unemployment boost workers pressured to go back to work will be putting themselves & their families at a higher risk of contracting #COVID19—a disease already disproportionately affecting Black & brown communities. https://msmagazine.com/2020/07/16/unemployment-compensation-runs-out-this-month-will-congress-savethe600/ #ExtendUI

The $600 weekly unemployment payments will expire at the end of the month. Activists call on Congress to extend the program and protect vulnerable workers.

He took down Michigan’s unemployment system. Now, he’s struggling to fix it.

Our founder, @UMichLaw Prof. @SteveGrayCares, has been fighting for UI reform as a claimant advocate for years. Now, he is the head of the UIA and is working to change the system from the inside.

Four years before Steve Gray took over the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency, he exposed a false fraud scandal that rocked state government and prompted reforms. Now, some lawmakers are calling for his ouster as he tries to fix a system crushed by record jobless claims amid the coronavirus pand...

Black Women Built That: Labor and Workers’ Rights

Today is a great day to celebrate #LucyParsons & #HattieCanty. We have Lucy Parson to thank for some of the biggest worker protections we enjoy today, like the eight hour work week. Hattie Canty led the longest strike in history, which lasted 6 years, 4 months and ten days.

We owe Lucy Parsons, Hattie Canty, and so many more a debt of gratitude for the rights we often take for granted today.

Ohio Has Stopped Kicking Workers Off Unemployment After A Hacker Targeted Its Website

The state of Ohio won't deny unemployment benefits to people who refuse to work during the COVID-19 pandemic after people targeted the website it was using to track these workers, according to officials at the state’s Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS).
