#RedAlertRESTART : On Sept 1, live events venues around the country will light up in red in support of the RESTART Act, which (if passed) would benefit an industry employing over 12 million people, contributing over $1 trillion to the US economy, and for which 95% of the industry is currently "cancelled" and out of work.

One of the hardest hit, one of the last to recover.

This photo is from the last live event my family attended before pandemic -- Paw Patrol Live in Youngstown, Ohio!

What was the last live event you attended?

Post a pic of it and check out #wemakeevents to see how you can help by writing your congressional representatives.

โ€œI feel like Iโ€™ve been swindledโ€ โ€“ concerns grow over โ€˜Holly Mariellaโ€™ trademark campaign | World Trademark Review

Have you DIY'ed your trademark application? If you get an unsolicited e-mail offering attorney help with your Office Action for "the lowest price," that's a big red flag, in this case, from someone apparently hijacking a legit attorney's name and bar number. Be careful out there, and if the offer sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.

Business owners have reached out to WTR in recent days over a trademark marketing campaign conducted by a person who appears to have hijacked the details of a California-based attorney.

In landmark case, Supreme Court rules LGBTQ workers are protected from job discrimination

Employers: The US Supreme Court rules that sexual orientation (and through a separate court case, gender identity) are covered discrimination protections under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. If you haven't already, review your employment practices, employee handbooks, and policies. Review your employment practices insurance policies. Update training for your managers and staff. Reach out if you need help with any of this -- Employment discrimination is a big deal.

The decision said Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which makes it illegal for employers to discriminate because of a person's sex, also covers sexual orientation and transgender status.

#LawMay Day 21. Choice of law and why? I'm a big fan of choice and freedom. So I guess it's fitting that I started my own firm, I wanted to have the freedom to work when I want, on the cases I want, and for the clients I want. Like most of us, I do my best work when it's work I want to be doing! And it's also fitting that the work I choose to do is work that enables other people to have those same kinds of freedoms for themselves-- the entrepreneurs and small business owners of the world who put their EVERYTHING into building a life for themselves and their family, and I'm honored to have even a tiny part in that journey. #lawmay #smallbusinesslawyer #smallbusinesseveryday #pittsburghbusiness #pghbusinesslaw #hospitalitykounsel #hospitalitylaw #eventslawyer

#LawMay Day 20 ... so we've skipped a few, but getting back to it now! Day 20 is your "biggest challenge. " My biggest challenge was moving to Pittsburgh, taking a new bar exam, and starting up a brand new law firm in a new practice area under new laws, in a place where I knew nobody and had no clients. Easy peasy, right? #startingover #pittsburgh #pittsburghbusiness #hospitalitylaw #eventlaw #hospitalitykounsel

#lawmay Days 9 & 10. Catch-up day! I got behind, but if we're talking #priorities , then I'm OK being a few days behind on my social media plan. So here goes: DAY 9: my main inspiration, and DAY 10: "on my table," are conveniently related: these plants are just waiting for the Pennsylvania frost to quit already, but until then, my whole garden (and some not pictured here) is on my kitchen table!

Why is this my inspiration? Because gardens start from a tiny little seed, and grow to be these big, beautiful things with a little bit of luck and lots of TLC... and that's my job for my clients-- helping this tiny dream sitting on the kitchen table get planned and mapped out, planted firmly on the ground, and well-tended for along the way. Happy Spring, guys! ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒฑ

#lawmay Day 8: Lawyer Selfie. All bundled up in mid-May, heading out to boost our local economy (translation: beer run to a few Beaver County breweries last weekend).

While at first glance it doesn't seem like a "lawyer" selfie because I'm not sitting at a desk, I think supporting our local small businesses, especially those in the hospitality industry I primarily serve, is a MASSIVE part of my job... buying whatever InBev is mixing with water this week doesn't, um, mix... The Day the Live Concert Returns

"In todayโ€™s world of fear and unease and social distancing, it's hard to imagine sharing experiences like these ever again. I donโ€™t know when it will be safe to return to singing arm in arm at the top of our lungs, hearts racing, bodies moving, souls bursting with life. But I do know that we will do it again, because we have to. Itโ€™s not a choice. Weโ€™re human. We need moments that reassure us that we are not alone."

#lawmay day 7: my favorite form of advocacy is full information, because that's the only way I believe good decisions get made. Without a real understanding of pros & cons, risk & reward, we can deprive our clients of the opportunity to control their own decision making process. I'm a big fan of seeing both sides of something ("my side" and "the other side,"to be nice about it), to ensure I'm not missing something big.

To that end, I wouldn't feel helpful to a client if I only presented my view, or a tailored list of points designed to sway them to my view -- that's a different kind of one-sided advocacy I gave up years ago. So maybe my favorite advocacy is the Devil's Advocate, but that just doesn't have a great ring to it ๐Ÿ˜‚

05/11/2020

#LawMay Day6: How I learned what I wanted to be when I grew up... trial & error. I didn't really know from the start I wanted to be a lawyer (hello, 5 undergrad majors), and I didn't even have a practice area I loved in law school.

With lots of decisions, if you don't know what you want to do, it can be just as helpful to know what you DON'T want to do.

As a new lawyer, I tried family & criminal law briefly and knew right away those weren't for me. I was a construction litigator for 5 years, and was totally turned off by the court process, but I loved my business clients. I was a foreclosure mediator and saw lots of abuse of the system (from both sides) so I knew I wasn't destined for consumer law... when I moved to Germany, I became fascinated with shopping in my own neighborhood and meeting the actual owners of the shops and the event operators... and the seed was planted!

I don't regret any minute of trying the wrong stuff, because now I'm damn sure I'm in absolutely the right place, doing the work I'm best at and care the most about, at absolutely the right time. #smallbusinesslawyer #lawmay #startingover

#lawmay Day 5: what's always in your hand? Coffee! At least until around 3 PM or so... this is one of my favorite coffee mugs. My mom gave me a set of these about 10 years ago. #lawmay Day 4: Your Preferred Work

I love working with #smallbusinessowners! My clients never cease to amaze me with their passion, work ethic, and grit. When I was a #babylawyer, I once had a colleague tell me she switched from divorce law to adoption because she much more enjoyed building families than tearing them apart, and that stuck with me for some reason.

Specifically, I most enjoy work in the hospitality industry -- live events, tourism, food & beverage, because these fall in line with my personal hobbies.

When I started building my own firm, I decided my #bestwork was in helping people build on their dream to own their own business, whether it's planning their business structure, developing their policies and risk management plans, helping them hire employees, or putting together a deal to buy their first building or even buy a company from a retiring colleague... working with these clients is energizing, rewarding, and reminds me every day of the importance of spending my family's hard-earned dollars where it really counts. #shopsmall #smallbusinesslawyer #supportlocal #eventsindustry

#lawmay Day 2: Your Space - I currently split my time evenly between two offices: my actual home office, and the Living Room Annex (pictured here). This photo is about 6 weeks old, but is something I will both want to remember and try to forget as time goes on -- working from the couch is a bit tougher go manage as far as physical space and phone calls go (just try telling a 4-year old to mute Paw Patrol for your video call)... but wins way more hugs throughout the day ๐Ÿค—
