We are proud to have successfully participated in a productive two-day Partners' Workshop focused on strengthening refugee-led and women-led initiatives for greater community impact.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Oxfam, Centenary Bank, Centenary Foundation, and all our partners for their trust, collaboration, and unwavering commitment to locally led solutions.

Together, we explored key priorities, including:

🔹 Women's economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods.
🔹 Protection, leadership, and inclusion of women and girls.
🔹 Building resilient communities through stronger partnerships, financial inclusion, and local leadership.

These meaningful discussions reaffirmed our shared vision of empowering refugee and host communities through collaboration, innovation, and sustainable impact.

At Kivu Light Foundation, we remain committed to turning these conversations into meaningful action. We look forward to strengthening our partnerships with Oxfam, Centenary Group Foundation, and other stakeholders to create more opportunities that transform lives and build resilient communities.

This week, Kivu Light Foundation (KILIFO) conducted a 2-day community engagement in Kityaza Village and New Goma Village to understand the real needs of newly arrived women, adolescents, and persons with disabilities. 30 participants were selected at random with guidance from community leaders.

​Through hygiene promotion and sensitization, we covered: personal hygiene, menstrual health, and disease prevention.

​Each participant received: liquid soap, a hygiene bucket, and sanitary pads made by women beneficiaries of our Malkia Project (soap and pads making training).

​Key challenges identified :

1. ​Basic Needs: Scarcity of hygiene and sanitation materials
2. ​Health: Unfamiliarity with Uganda’s health system delays access to care
3. ​Wellbeing: Stress, trauma, and cultural adjustment
4. ​Protection: Women, girls, children, older persons, and persons with disabilities face the highest risks

​Key Community Priorities Identified :

1. ​Limited access to safe and clean drinking water
2. ​Adult English learning and access to economic opportunities so families can support their households

​
​Beyond materials, the greatest impact was trust, knowledge exchange, and strong interest in KILIFO’s economic empowerment programs.

​KILIFO invites humanitarian agencies, government partners, donors, and refugee-led networks to partner with us to deliver community-led solutions for safe arrival, health, protection, and economic inclusion in Nakivale. Soap Making Training for Refugee Women, girls and youthin Nakivale

Kivu Light Foundation, through the Malaika Project, will host a 2-day hands-on training in liquid and bar soap making on 22–23 May 2026 at the KILIFO Office in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, Uganda.

The training aims to equip refugee women and girls with marketable skills to start micro-enterprises, strengthen household resilience, and reduce reliance on aid. It focuses on economic empowerment, restoring stability for those whose education was disrupted by conflict, and promoting community-led recovery and gender equality.

KILIFO invites UN agencies, donors, and partners to support the initiative to scale impact and advance sustainable, women-led solutions to displacement.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Mugisha Kevine Ntawigenga as the new Chief Executive Officer of Kivu Light Foundation.
Kevine is a dedicated humanitarian worker with extensive experience in community engagement, facilitation, counselling, financial literacy, mental health, and women advocacy. While living in Nakivale Refugee Settlement, she has actively contributed to community wellbeing by conducting community awareness sessions and supporting survivors of gender-based violence (GBV).
Her work focuses on empowering refugees through effective communication, promoting mental wellbeing, strengthening financial literacy, and advocating for women and vulnerable groups. She is deeply passionate about protection, inclusion, and building resilient communities.
As she takes on this leadership role, we are confident that her dedication and commitment to community empowerment will further strengthen the mission and impact of the foundation.
Please join us in congratulating Kevine on this important milestone and wishing her success as she leads the organization forward.
