The People’s Liberation Party leader and former Justice Minister Martha Karua has moved to a Ugandan court seeking to overturn her deportation and secure her return to represent jailed opposition leader Kizza Besigye and his co-accused in a criminal case stemming from their 2024 arrest in Nairobi.

Ms Karua and the Uganda Law Society want the court to declare the immigration decision unlawful, arbitrary, unreasonable and procedurally improper.

Panel Discussion | Smart Justice: Re-imagining Dispute Resolution in the Age of AI and Digital Transformation.

Hon. Justice Geoffrey Kiryabwire, Justice of the Court of Appeal, emphasized that Smart Justice can thrive alongside other smart, data- and technology-driven solutions.

“When you talk about Smart Justice, think along the lines of the current trend of smart things, smartphones, smart boards, smart cities, smart everything.”

He noted that the basic components of anything considered “smart” are IT integration and data, stressing the need to embrace digital transformation in shaping day-to-day activities within the justice sector and delivering Smart Justice.

Ms. Christine Birabwa - Nsubuga of Praxis Conflict Centre Ltd Uganda emphasised the need for clear pathways to guide the justice sector towards where it needs to go. She cautioned against framing technological advancement as a replacement for lawyers, instead calling for lawyers to actively embrace the Fourth Industrial Revolution and work alongside emerging technologies.

Meanwhile, the CEO of the Muslim Arbitration and Mediation Centre, Adv. Namugenyi Zubedah, posed an important question: Are we having conversations that support the sustainability of technology?

She further called for a comprehensive ADR toolbox that brings together different mechanisms for dispute resolution, including mediation, arbitration, small claims procedures and other appropriate pathways, to make justice more accessible, efficient and responsive.

: PANEL DISCUSSION | Evolving Practice and Legal Education: The Lawyer’s Duty of Diligence in the Technology Era

The conversation turned to the evolving role of technology in legal practice, with Prof. Christopher Mbazzira highlighting the substantial improvements technology can bring to the quality and efficiency of legal work, while cautioning against losing the human element.

He noted that technology-driven processes can lack aspects such as judicial discretion, human judgment and sensitivity, and may reproduce biases if not carefully evaluated. He emphasized that technology should serve as a tool for efficiency while keeping the human element at the centre of legal practice.

Mr. Paul Mukiibi posed a thought-provoking question: “Does technology measure efficiency?”

The panel reflected on the importance of temperament, decorum, discretion, professional judgment, and other human attributes that technology has yet to fully replicate.

A key question emerged: Do we delegate our professional responsibilities to machines?

The discussion challenged lawyers to remain digitally aligned while safeguarding the human judgment, professional responsibility and ethical standards that underpin the legal profession.

Mr. Mukiibi summed up the conversation with a call for hard work, diligence and professional ethics as lawyers navigate an increasingly technology-driven legal landscape.

: PERSONAL BRANDING BY A LAWYER

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Muslim Arbitration and Mediation Centre Uganda (MAMC), Adv. Namugenyi Zubedah, took the festival through the strategic positioning of legal practice and the power of building a strong personal brand.

Reflecting on her own professional journey, Adv. Zubedah shared:
“I worked at the Supreme Court of Uganda, drafting judgments, and served as an apprentice in other roles at the Judiciary's top bench. I gained a lot of skills, but I later realised that no one knew me.”

She described this realisation as a wake-up call that pushed her to step out of the shadows and show the world the woman behind the veil.

“Are you building a digital reputation?” she challenged the lawyers, sharing how she turned to LinkedIn because it brings together professionals from across the world.

Adv. Zubedah urged lawyers to be deliberate about how they position themselves, tell their stories and build their digital reputations, reminding them that professional excellence must be accompanied by visibility.

She challenged the profession with a thought-provoking question: Lawyers are among the most educated professionals in Uganda, so why should they also be among the most frustrated?
