CONSTITUTIONAL PROTECTION OF WOMEN’S RIGHTS

Article 33 of the 1995 Constitution of Uganda outlines the rights of women as follows:

1. Women are entitled to full and equal dignity with men.

2. The State must provide the necessary resources and opportunities to support the welfare and advancement of women.

3. The State is obligated to protect women's rights, acknowledging their unique societal roles, including maternal functions.

4. Women have the right to equal treatment and opportunities with men in political, economic, and social spheres.

5. Women are entitled to affirmative action to address historical, traditional, or customary imbalances.

6. Any laws, customs, or traditions that undermine women's dignity, welfare, or status are prohibited.

Duties of a Citizen as per Article 17 of the 1995 Constitution of Uganda

Every citizen of Uganda has the duty to:

(a) respect the national anthem, flag, coat of arms, and currency;
(b) respect the rights and freedoms of others;
(c) protect children and vulnerable persons from any form of abuse, harassment, or ill-treatment;
(d) protect and preserve public property;
(e) defend Uganda and render national service when necessary;
(f) cooperate with lawful agencies in maintaining law and order;
(g) pay taxes;
(h) register for electoral and other lawful purposes;
(i) combat corruption and the misuse or wastage of public property; and
(j) create and protect a clean and healthy environment.

A Power of Attorney (POA) terminates upon the death of the Principal, as an agent can only act on behalf of a living person. When an agent performs an act under a POA, it is as if the Principal is carrying out the act. Therefore, once the Principal is deceased, the agent no longer has authority to act.

A POA can only remain effective after the Principal's death if the agent acts without actual knowledge of the death. However, an agent cannot claim to act on behalf of a deceased Principal, especially if the POA does not explicitly authorize such actions posthumously.
