Widow Support TT

Widow Support TT Founded in 2011 by Soraya Nanan β€” Widow, Attorney, Motivational Speaker & Single Mother. Widow Support TT, through the experiences of its founder Ms.

Widow Support TT empowers widows across T&T to heal, rebuild & rise through support, advocacy & sisterhoodπŸ’œ Widow Support TT (formerly the Lincoln Nanan Foundation) is a community for widows founded by Soraya Nanan-widow, lawyer, single mother, friend & speaker. It is a sisterhood of widows who are supportive, non-judgemental, understanding, caring, thoughtful & compassionate. We

provide a safe haven where persons in grief can speak openly about their grief. Soraya Nanan, has recognised the need to have proper support systems in place on the loss of a husband. It is for this reason that the Widow Support TT’s primary goal is to offer support, advice and enrichment to the lives of widows. Despite our focus we recognise the importance of raising awareness on leukaemia in tandem with our support work. In the long term, we hope to advocate for greater focus on bone marrow transplants in Trinidad and Tobago. In a glance, Widow Support TT aims to:

1. Offer complete support – emotional, mental, and financial to widows in an attempt to enrich their lives.

2. Offer grief counselling to children who have lost a parent .

3. Establish a Widow’s Fund to assist women, financially, emotionally and otherwise, who need support after experiencing the death of their husband.

4. Network with relevant local and international organisations and professionals to ensure that widows have the support they need.

5. Source funds from donations and grants. In the long term, Widow Support TT aims to:

1. Set up a bone marrow transplant donor list for persons who are diagnosed with leukaemia and need to get a donor for a bone marrow transplant.

2. Educate persons on leukaemia and its treatment.

3. Financially assist persons of any age group who need life saving treatment, surgery or otherwise.

β€œLet us lend support for others going through this journey, which is very real and raw to us. No man is an island.” – Ms. Soraya Nanan

πŸ’œ GRIEF CAN SHOW UP IN THE SMALLEST THINGS

Grief is not always crying, sadness or having a difficult day.

Sometimes it is keeping their number in your phone because deleting it feels like losing another little piece of them.

It is remembering birthdays, anniversaries and other special dates without needing a calendar reminder.

It is hearing a song and suddenly being transported back to a moment when the two of you were together.

It is looking through old photographs and wishing you had taken more β€” even though, at the time, you never imagined there would come a day when photographs would become so precious.

And sometimes it is simply wanting to say their name.

As widows and widowers, we understand that these little things can remain with us long after the intense grief of the early days has softened.

But there is something else too.

Over time, these memories do not always have to bring only sadness. A song can eventually make us smile. A photograph can remind us how fortunate we were to share that moment. Saying their name can become less about the pain of their absence and more about keeping their memory part of our story.

We continue living. We make new memories and discover new versions of ourselves. But the person we loved remains part of who we are.

So keep the photograph. Remember the date. Tell the story. Say their name. πŸ’œ

There is no need to erase the past in order to embrace the future.

At Widow Support Trinidad and Tobago, we understand the many different ways grief shows up β€” even in the smallest things.

πŸ’œ GRIEF DOESN’T ALWAYS LOOK LIKE TEARS

There comes a time in grief when you may no longer cry every day.

You go to work. You take care of your family. You laugh with friends. You attend events, make plans and begin enjoying parts of life again. From the outside, people may think that the grief has gone.

But those of us who have lost a spouse know it can be much quieter than that.

Sometimes grief is walking into the house and noticing the silence.

Sometimes it is wanting to tell your husband or wife something that happened during the day.

Sometimes it is seeing other couples together and remembering the life you once shared.

And sometimes there are no tears at all β€” just a moment when you feel their absence.

As time passes, grief often changes. It may no longer consume every day, but that does not mean the person we loved has stopped mattering or that we have forgotten.

We learn to carry both things at once: the life we are building now and the love and memories of the life we shared before.

So never measure someone's grief by how often you see them cry. And never feel guilty because you are crying less, laughing more or beginning to enjoy life again.

There is no single way to grieve. πŸ’œπŸ¦‹

At Widow Support Trinidad and Tobago, we understand the tears β€” and we understand the quiet moments when there are none.

We Heal and Grieve Together.

πŸ’œπŸ¦‹ HELLO SEPTEMBER!

A new month is here, bringing with it another opportunity to keep moving forward, one day at a time.

For those of us who have experienced the loss of a spouse, a β€œfresh start” does not mean forgetting the life we had or the person we loved. It simply means giving ourselves permission to continue living, growing and finding moments of happiness along the way.

As we enter September, may we make room for hope in our hearts, peace in our minds, strength for the difficult days and gratitude for the good ones.

May this month bring new friendships, unexpected blessings, laughter, meaningful moments and reminders that even after loss, life can still hold beautiful experiences. πŸ’œ

And if September happens to be a difficult month for you, remember that you do not have to journey through it alone. Your WSTT family is here.

Here’s to a new month, new memories and another month of supporting and uplifting one another. πŸ¦‹

Happy September from all of us at Widow Support Trinidad and Tobago.

πŸ’œπŸŽ¬ WSTT MOVIE DAY β€” GOOD COMPANY, GOOD VIBES & GREAT MEMORIES! πŸΏπŸ¦‹

A few snapshots from our Widow Support Trinidad and Tobago Movie Day at CinemaONE!

Our members were joined by their children, family members and some of our wonderful supporters for an afternoon of fellowship, laughter and simply enjoying each other's company. πŸ’œ

At WSTT, we believe support extends beyond the difficult moments of grief. It is also about creating opportunities to get out, connect with others, strengthen friendships and make new and happy memories together.

Grief may have brought many of us together, but it does not have to define every moment we share. There is still room for laughter, friendship, family, fellowship and joy. 🎬🍿

A heartfelt thank you to our supporters and family members who continue to embrace what we do and who joined us for this special outing.

πŸ“Έ And we're not finished yet β€” we have lots more Movie Day moments to share!

πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡Ή HAPPY 64TH INDEPENDENCE DAY, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO! πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡Ή

Today, Widow Support Trinidad and Tobago joins the nation in celebrating 64 years of Independence.

As we reflect on our journey as a people, may we continue to build a country grounded in unity, compassion, resilience and hope. Despite our differences, we share one home and one future, and each of us has a part to play in making Trinidad and Tobago a better place for generations to come.

On this Independence Day, let us celebrate the strength of our people, the richness of our culture and the beauty of the twin-island nation we are privileged to call home. β€οΈπŸ€πŸ–€

May we continue to live by the words of our national motto:

β€œTogether We Aspire, Together We Achieve.”

From the Executive and members of Widow Support Trinidad and Tobago, we wish everyone a safe, peaceful and Happy Independence Day. πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡Ή

God bless Trinidad and Tobago. πŸ™πŸ½πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡Ή

πŸ’œ THIS WEEKEND, REMEMBER TO FILL YOUR CUP

After loss, we can become so accustomed to simply getting through each day that we sometimes forget we are also allowed to enjoy life.

Self-care does not always have to be something big. Sometimes it is resting without feeling guilty, listening to your favourite music, taking a break from your phone, going somewhere you enjoy or simply spending a few hours laughing and talking with people who understand you.

And sometimes, filling your cup means fellowship. πŸ’œ

Tomorrow, some of our WSTT members will be doing exactly that at our Movie Day! 🎬🍿

Our social activities are an important part of what we do at Widow Support Trinidad and Tobago. Grief may have brought us together, but our journey is also about rebuilding, forming friendships, getting out of the house, trying new things and learning that it is okay to enjoy ourselves again.

You do not have to attend every activity, and you certainly do not have to be ready for everything at once. But if you are a widow or widower who would like some fellowship, friendship and the opportunity to connect with others who understand this journey, we would love to hear from you.

Feel free to message Widow Support Trinidad and Tobago privately on Facebook or Instagram to learn more about our group and upcoming activities. πŸ¦‹

To everyone joining us tomorrow for Movie Day β€” come ready to relax, laugh, enjoy the movie and, most importantly, enjoy each other's company! πŸŽ₯πŸΏπŸ’œ

Whatever you choose to do this weekend, make a little time for you.

πŸ’œ FUNCTIONING DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN HEALED

One of the things people may not understand about grief is that life does not stop simply because your heart is hurting.

There are still children to care for, bills to pay, meals to prepare, jobs to go to, appointments to keep and decisions to make.

So we learn to function.

We get dressed. We go to work. We answer messages. We attend meetings. We take care of our families. We smile, laugh and sometimes even become the person everyone else depends on.

From the outside, it can look as though everything is fine.

But functioning and healing are not the same thing.

A widow or widower can be incredibly productive while still grieving deeply. We can have good days and still have moments when the loneliness feels overwhelming. We can laugh with friends during the day and miss our spouse terribly when we return to a quiet home at night.

That is why we should never assume that because someone looks okay, they no longer need support.

Sometimes the people who appear strongest are simply very good at carrying what others cannot see.

So continue to check on the widow or widower in your life β€” not only immediately after the loss, but months and years later.

Ask how they are really doing. Remember the difficult dates. Invite them out. Include them. Say their loved one's name. And most importantly, give them permission to answer honestly.

At Widow Support Trinidad and Tobago, we understand that healing is not measured by how busy, productive or composed someone appears to be.

Behind every smile is a story we may not fully know. So let us continue to lead with compassion. πŸ’œπŸ¦‹

πŸ’œ GRIEF HAS NO EXPIRATION DATE

One of the most painful things a grieving person can hear is, β€œYou should be over it by now.”

But how do you β€œget over” someone who was woven into your everyday life?

A husband or wife was not simply someone we knew. This was the person we shared our home with, made plans with, raised families with, celebrated with, argued with, laughed with and imagined growing older beside.

When they die, that love does not suddenly disappear.

And neither does grief.

What can change, however, is how we carry it.

With time, the tears may come less often. We learn new routines. We take on responsibilities we never expected to handle alone. We begin going out again, laughing again, travelling, celebrating and making new memories.

We may even find love and companionship again.

None of that means we have forgotten.

And having a difficult day years later does not mean we have gone backwards.

Grief and healing can exist together. So can remembrance and happiness. We can deeply miss the person we lost while still embracing the life that remains before us.

So perhaps instead of asking someone, β€œWhen are you going to get over it?” ask:

β€œHow are you doing today?”

And then give them the space to answer honestly.

At Widow Support Trinidad and Tobago, we do not place a timetable on grief. We support one another as we remember, rebuild and continue living.

Because grief is not a weakness.

It is evidence that someone mattered. πŸ’œπŸ¦‹

πŸ’œ CAN WE EVER REALLY BE PREPARED FOR LOSS?

Sometimes we know our loved one is seriously ill. We may sit beside them through hospital visits, treatments and difficult days. We may watch their health decline and even know, somewhere in our hearts, that our time together may be coming to an end.

For others, there is no warning at all. One ordinary day changes everything.

But whether the loss was expected or sudden, nothing can fully prepare you for waking up and realising that the person who was such an important part of your life is no longer physically there.

You can prepare documents. Make arrangements. Have conversations. Say goodbye.

But how do you prepare your heart for the silence afterwards?

How do you prepare for reaching for the phone before remembering you cannot call them?

For walking into your home and feeling their absence?

For making decisions that were once made together?

For birthdays, anniversaries and family occasions that will never feel quite the same?

In those early days, it can feel as though the colour has disappeared from life.

But slowly β€” sometimes so slowly that we don't even notice it happening β€” little pieces of colour begin to return.

A genuine laugh.

A good day.

A new friendship.

An unexpected opportunity.

A moment when a memory makes you smile instead of cry.

We never stop wishing our loved one could have remained with us. But we gradually learn that continuing to live does not mean leaving them behind.

Life can have colour again.

It may be different from the life we imagined, and finding it may take time, but there can still be joy, purpose, friendship, love and meaningful experiences ahead.

To anyone in the early days of loss who cannot see that yet, you don't have to see the whole road today. Just take the journey one day at a time. πŸ’œπŸ¦‹

At Widow Support Trinidad and Tobago, we walk alongside one another through the grey days and, eventually, towards the colour again.

We Heal and Grieve Together.
