Tension in Kapoita as Residents Ordered to Leave Town

Kapoita, Eastern Equatoria — Tension flared in Kapoita town following an incident in which members of the Dinka community were reportedly ordered to leave the area, sparking fear and uncertainty among residents.

According to eyewitnesses, armed security personnel were seen enforcing the order on Monday, 09/February/2026, with several people gathering to observe as makeshift structures and shelters were dismantled. Heavy machinery, including an excavator, was deployed at the scene, while uniformed forces monitored the operation. The attached photographs show the presence of armed men, military vehicles, and the demolition of wooden and wire-fenced structures believed to belong to affected civilians.

Residents said the move came suddenly and without prior public explanation, leading to panic among families who were forced to vacate. Some locals described the incident as targeting civilians based on ethnic identity, raising concerns over collective punishment and violations of citizens’ rights.

As of the time of reporting, no official statement had been released by local authorities to clarify the legal basis for the order or to outline plans for the displaced individuals. Human rights advocates have previously warned that forced displacement along ethnic lines risks deepening communal divisions and undermining peace efforts in the region.

Community leaders have called for calm and urged the government to intervene, stressing the need for dialogue, protection of civilians, and adherence to the rule of law.

The situation in Kapoita remains tense, with residents fearing further escalation if urgent measures are not taken to address grievances and restore trust among communities.
