Let's talk about the $300 open market voucher initiative announced at Budget 2024.
For a young couple just starting on their first jobs, it is fair to say that they will more likely meet the PPHS criteria of a monthly household income of $7,000 or below, or $3,500 per capita. Whether they choose to rent a room or an entire unit (likely to be 2-room), this $300 may offset anywhere between 20-35% of their rental cost per month.
For a young family with children though? Even if they do meet the criteria (meaning a per capita income of less than $2,333), they are likely to need more space and have to rent a bigger unit. After factoring in the $300, it is still a substantial amount (up to half or more of their entire monthly household income) that they have to pay in rent every month.
Let's ask ourselves, who needs the voucher the most? Who has more pressing needs? To what extent will this $300 help alleviate a necessary cost (for some)? Would some differentiation (say a range of $100-$500 depending on the type of unit or per household member) instead of a fixed $300 be more helpful? What are your thoughts?
