8 years ago, I was invited together with Lawyer Khoo, to Channel 8 TV Programme Good Morning Singapore to share my experience as the first few batches of citizens to do their LPAs (Lasting Power of Attorney) when the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) came into effect in 2010.
In my practice as a Financial & Legacy Planning practitioner, I can't stress enough the importance of drawing up a personal LPA, because of what my family had to go through (spent on costly lawyer fees and time waiting for the court order to act on my father's behalf) when my father got into an accident and sustained traumatic brain injury, which rendered him mentally incapacitated for life.
Today, doing a LPA Form 1 costs much lower (between $50-$200) and the process is much simpler. However, I felt that the level of awareness of the LPA is still very low and there are plenty of misconceptions about it. That was why in Dec 2019, I accepted the invitation to get on radio again with Radio Host ηͺηͺ, to share more real life stories of the dire consequences of not having an LPA when mental incapacity sets in.
This year is 2020, a decade after the MCA fully came into effect. However, I'm still appalled by the lack of awareness of the LPA... so therefore, I have decided to step up and contribute to the community by advocating LPA awareness.
You have heard of Superman, Iron Man and IpMan.... self-introducing the local born and bred Singaporean..... LPAMan ! Coming to a cinema.... I mean neighbourhood near you π
Stay tuned !
