My experience getting a Driving License in Saudi Arabia.
Getting a Driving in Saudi Arabia is a very important step for expats and residents. Many people are unsure about the process on , the official government platform. I recently got my Saudi Driving License, and here is my step by step journey to make it easier for you.
Application via Absher -
- Log in with your Iqama ID on Absher platform and apply for a new Driving License in Saudi Arabia.
- The system shows you the driving schools in Riyadh, Jeddah, and other cities with available dates and time slots.
- Choose the time and location that works best for you.
Evaluation Test at Driving School -
- Since I had an International Driving License in Saudi Arabia, I applied for Advanced Training.
- On the scheduled day, I went to the driving school and filled out an online form (SAR 50). The service center can assist if needed.
- Based on your evaluation, you will be placed in one of three categories: Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced.
- Fees depend on your level. For me, it was Advanced, so I paid SAR 690.
Theory Training & Computer Test -
- You must attend an online driving theory class. The course is in Arabic and Braille, but manuals are available in English and other languages for expats.
- After 2 days, I took the computer theory test (30 objective questions).
I scored 22/30 = 73%. (Very Poor)
- The theory test is based on the Saudi Driving License manual, so it’s good to download and study it in English.
Practical Driving Training -
The practical training lasts 2 hours and covers -
Reverse parking and parallel parking
Lane discipline and turning
Following traffic signals and road safety rules
After this, you take the final practical driving test in Saudi Arabia.
License Fees & Issuance -
- Once you pass the final test, you need to pay the Saudi Driving License fees online through Absher using your Iqama number -
a. 2 years = SAR 80
b. 5 years = SAR 200
c. 10 years = SAR 400
The license is issued within 10 minutes after payment.
The full process took me 8 days, from my first evaluation test (28th August Thursday) to receiving my license today (4th September Thursday).
If you are an expat, make sure to study the Saudi Driving License manual in English and practice sample questions before your theory exam.
