A AIMA apenas efetuará o agendamento após confirmação de que o candidato tem matrícula aberta no estabelecimento universitário que indicou, que frequenta efetivamente curso indicado e que pagou as propinas devidas.

To successfully submit your application, you will need the following **documents**:

• Scanned copy of your passport
• Scanned copy of proof of enrolment
• Scanned copy of proof of tuition fee payment

AIMA will only make the appointment after confirming that the applicant is enrolled at the university they have indicated, that they are actually attending the course indicated and that they have paid the tuition fees due.

**Note:** All forms submitted that do not fall within the scope of this matter or that are not duly validated by the indicated Educational Institutions will be automatically disregarded as they do not meet the legal requirements necessary to obtain a Residence Permit.

What I wish every North American knew before considering Portugal

There is so much beauty in choosing Portugal.
The light, the safety, the sense of space but the most important part of the move is not the country itself. It is the mindset you bring with you. This is a different rhythm of life, and people who thrive here are the ones who arrive with openness rather than expectations.

Living in Portugal means slowing down, even when you do not plan to. Processes take longer. Plans shift. Bureaucracy asks for patience. Most people are surprised by this at first, but once they embrace the pace, they discover a feeling they were missing for years: room to breathe.

Another thing I wish everyone knew is that the first few months are emotional. Beautiful, yes but also disorienting. New culture, new systems, new language. The more prepared you are for that transition, the smoother and more grounded it becomes. Portugal rewards people who take their time and allow themselves to adapt gradually.

And finally: choosing the right region matters more than anything else. Portugal is small, but it is incredibly diverse. Climate, lifestyle, pace, and cost of living change quickly from region to region. When you choose intentionally, the country opens up in extraordinary ways.

There is a quiet truth I wish every North American would hear before they begin thinking about Portugal: this country can welcome you beautifully, but it rewards those who move slowly, observe carefully, and understand the local rhythm of life. Portugal is not a place to rush through; it is a place to grow into.

Many people arrive expecting a seamless transition simply because they have visited on holiday. But living here full-time is a very different experience. The bureaucracy has its own pace, the housing market requires patience and realistic expectations, and the cultural differences reveal themselves gently, month after month. When you know this in advance, the process becomes far less stressful.

Another point I wish more people understood is that Portugal is not one lifestyle. Life in Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve, the Silver Coast, and the interior can feel like entirely different countries in cost, climate, culture, and community. Choosing where to live is not about finding the “best” region; it is about matching your needs, budget, and temperament to the right environment.
