Understanding legal contexts is indeed complex. What amazes me the most is having supposedly legal experts invoking international investments arbitration conventions that are no where related to this matter. The law is clear and as the Ministry of Presidency said, if any consultant promised their client that by applying for residency through investment, they would be granted nationality, they were deceiving them. Just as they are doing it now, with let them believe the court path can bring them the desired result.

No one really believes me when I say that logic is not a concept applied by public offices and its servants.

If you never find yourself in a catch 22 in Portugal, just wait for it. It's coming pretty soon.

Example: You need a document from the tax office to hand in another public office (nothing is really connected here) and the tax office tells you that in order to obtain that document, you must provide them with a piece of paper issued by the tax office itself.

You think: Perfect, they have that information already so I don't need to provide them with a document that they already have, right?

Wrong! They won't give you the document you first required unless you go to the tax office or obtain that second document from your personal tax office area - a document that is issued by THEM! And if for example you miss a deadline due to this ridiculous procedure and sometimes laziness of the agent, it's your problem. Accountability is something that doesn't exist either.

This is a Portuguese parliament member exactly asking the government how can this be true, and how come we need to make new laws for the law that already exists can be enforced. Mind blowing indeed!

Oh Portugal... that small corner planted by the sea (aquele cantinho à beira mar plantado) like we Portuguese, call it.

The weather ☀️, the food 🍤, the wine 🍷 the landscape, the people, the beaches. We couldn't ask for more. But... Portugal is not just for everyone.

It can be a mess when you need to rely on procedures, timelines, efficiency, competence, readiness...

So, if you're not willing to be patient and embrace this unbothered culture, you won't enjoy all the other amazing things Portugal has to offer.

If you are a Golden Visa holder and you are mad about the new nationality law, I get it! You're not alone.

Many people moved with the idea of obtaining 🇵🇹 Portuguese citizenship after 5 years and that's totally legit.

However, you need to understand that residency and citizenship are two completely different things.

It's the same as in a relationship: You can date for years and even have plans for marriage, but that doesn't mean one will really lead to the other. Marriage has different legal obligations that dating doesn't.

So, when you apply for a resident visa (like the GV), that grants you residency and that's it. It didn't grant you citizenship after 5 years. It ALLOWED citizenship after 5 years, which is very different.

Like in a relationship, you can move forward with the expectation to get married, but there are many factors that can change the outcome.

If you are thinking about spending thousands of euros on a law suit for this matter. Think again. Expectations, unfortunately aren't covered by the Portuguese law.
