In challenhing times for our region, relationships between people matter more than ever.

Yesterday, our Managing Partner Rasem Kamal met with his longtime friend Mubarak Al-Sulaiti, Chairman of Al-Sulaiti Law Firm and Head of the Qatar Lawyers Association.

They exchanged views on the legal profession in the region and the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation among lawyers across borders.

Shaping the Future of Legal Practice in the Middle East

Our Managing Partner, Rasem Kamal, participated in the IBA Middle East Conference in Dubai, delivering welcoming remarks on behalf of the IBA Arab Regional Forum and speaking on developments in the Middle East legal market.

The discussions reflected the continuing evolution of the regional legal landscape and the growing demand for integrated cross-border legal advice.

Today in Abu Dhabi, I had the pleasure of moderating the opening panel of the 27th IBA Arbitration Day, one of the world’s leading forums for international arbitration.

Our session, “From Outer Space to Desert Sands and Under the Sea,” examined how arbitration must evolve as disputes increasingly arise from frontier environments — space, deep-sea resources, and mega-projects in extreme climates.

I was joined by an outstanding panel: Amna Al Owais, Juan-Carlos Boué, Rebeca Mosquera and Mahesh Rai. We discussed enforceability beyond borders, the growing role of AI and satellite data as evidence, and what it would actually mean to enforce a space or deep-sea arbitral award.

I also had the honour of delivering the welcome remarks on behalf of the IBA Arab Regional Forum, together with my co-chair Noradèle Radjai, reflecting the ARF’s role in anchoring global arbitration conversations in the Arab World.

Holding this discussion in Abu Dhabi — a hub for energy, technology and giga-projects — made it clear that these are no longer future questions, but present ones. And whether in Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, or Ramallah, we are no longer watching these developments from the sidelines — we are helping shape them.

Managing partner Rasem Kamal had the pleasure to speak yesterday at the 14th ICC MENA Conference on International Arbitration in Dubai, a flagship gathering that once again brought together an outstanding mix of arbitrators, counsel, in-house lawyers, and regional decision-makers.

The conference offered a strong and timely programme addressing some of the most pressing issues facing international arbitration in the MENA region today—ranging from the interaction between courts and arbitral tribunals, to state and SOE disputes, investment risk, pricing volatility, and enforcement challenges. The discussions were practical, candid, and firmly grounded in regional realities.

Mr. Kamal spoke in the final session of the conference, which focused on awarding costs in international arbitration, including common pitfalls and best practices in drafting well-reasoned and predictable costs decisions. The session combined a live mock ICC Court scrutiny of a draft award with a broader discussion on emerging trends and approaches in costs allocation. I was delighted to share the panel with Rozana ALTayyar, Samaa Haridi, Karam Farah, Stella Leptourgou, Claudia Salomon, and Sami Houerbi.

Beyond the excellent substantive discussions, the conference was equally valuable for the quality of the connections and exchanges throughout the day—both during the sessions and in the networking that followed.
