The federal government has proposed a major increase in charges for restoring taxpayer status on the Federal Board of Revenue Active Taxpayers List (ATL) through the Finance Bill 2026.
Under the proposal, individuals filing income tax returns after the deadline would pay Rs. 25,000 instead of Rs. 1,000 to regain ATL status — a 2,400% increase. Restoration charges for Associations of Persons would rise to Rs. 50,000 and for companies to Rs. 100,000.
The move aims to discourage late filing, improve tax compliance, and strengthen revenue collection from July 2026.
