FRIDAY REFLECTION QUESTION

PERFORMANCE HAS A HUMAN SIDE.

Behind every target, KPI, and rating is a person.

When performance falls short, where does the conversation begin?

“Why aren’t they performing?”

Or:

“What might be getting in their way?”

Good performance management holds people accountable — while making sure they have what they need to succeed.

Better coaching starts with better thinking.

What happens when we give people the space, attention, and encouragement to think for themselves?

Join Janet Webster for our upcoming Leadership Learning Bites session, Strengthening Coaching through Thinking Environment, where she’ll explore how the Thinking Environment approach can help leaders create richer coaching conversations—ones that encourage deeper thinking, greater ownership, and meaningful growth.

Because sometimes, the most powerful thing a coach can do isn’t to give an answer. It’s to create the space for someone to find their own.

WELCOME TO RAINY AUGUST! Where we dive into performance, redefined.

What does good performance actually look like here?

Performance is often reduced to numbers, targets, ratings, and results.

But managing performance is about more than measuring what happened.

It means making expectations clear. Setting meaningful goals. Having regular conversations. Giving people the feedback and support they need to improve. And when performance falls short, asking not only what happened, but also what might be getting in the way?

This August, we're looking at Performance, Redefined through Indicator 4: Managing Performance — and exploring what it really takes to help people and organisations perform at their best.

Because accountability matters.

But accountability without clarity or support rarely creates better performance.

So, what does good performance actually look like in your organisation?

Last July 25, 2026 Investors in People Philippines celebrated its 15th anniversary.

To mark the occasion, we asked our team to reflect on the journey so far:

What moments have defined IIP? What impact has stayed with us? And how has this journey changed us personally?

Their answers were thoughtful, honest, and deeply personal.

In the next few pictures, we share 15 Reflections from 15 Years—a collection of lessons, milestones, and moments that have shaped who we are today, shared through photos from one of our most meaningful memories: our trip to London, where our team was complete. Looking back, these photos are more than memories from a trip. They're snapshots of a team with a shared purpose that continues to guide the work we do today.

Here's to 15 years of investing in people, and to the many more stories still to come. Happy Anniversary Investors in People Philippines!

Feeling Seen Is Part of Wellbeing

When we think about wellbeing at work, we often think about benefits, mental health initiatives, or work-life balance. While these all matter, wellbeing is also shaped by something much simpler: whether people feel seen.

In the Harvard Business Review article "Why Employees Need Both Recognition and Appreciation," the authors explain that recognition celebrates what people do, while appreciation values who they are. Both matter, but appreciation reminds people that they are valued beyond their latest achievement.

When people consistently feel seen, heard, and appreciated, they're more likely to experience a stronger sense of belonging and connection at work. And sometimes, a genuine conversation or a sincere "thank you" can have a greater impact than a formal reward.

Are You Recognizing What Matters Most?

Most leaders genuinely want to recognize their people. But what if the work that matters most isn't always the work we notice first?

In the Harvard Business Review article "A Better Way to Recognize Your Employees," the author suggests that leaders naturally recognize what they observe. The challenge is that what leaders notice isn't always what employees value most or feel most proud of.

Some of the most meaningful contributions happen behind the scenes. They may not attract attention, but they often make the biggest difference.

Meaningful recognition starts with curiosity. Instead of assuming what deserves praise, leaders can ask a simple question:

"What accomplishment are you most proud of?"

That question shifts recognition from being leader-centered to people-centered. It gives people the opportunity to share what they value about their own work and helps leaders recognize contributions that might otherwise go unseen.

At Investors in People, Indicator 5 – Recognizing and Rewarding People reminds us that recognition is most meaningful when it is genuine, timely, and personal. Sometimes, the best way to recognize someone isn't by noticing more. It's by asking better questions.

Recognition Is Important. Appreciation Is Essential.

When we talk about workplace recognition, it's easy to think about celebrating achievements, meeting targets, or acknowledging a job well done. Those moments matter, but they're only part of what helps people thrive at work.

In the Harvard Business Review article "Why Employees Need Both Recognition and Appreciation," the authors make an important distinction. Recognition is about acknowledging what someone has done, while appreciation is about valuing who they are and the contribution they bring as a person. Recognition is often tied to performance. Appreciation reminds people that they matter beyond their latest accomplishment.

That distinction has a profound impact on wellbeing.

People who feel seen, valued, and genuinely appreciated are more likely to experience a stronger sense of belonging, purpose, and connection at work. Sometimes, a sincere conversation or a thoughtful acknowledgment can have just as much impact as a formal reward.

As leaders, it's worth asking ourselves: Do our people only hear from us when they've achieved something extraordinary, or do they regularly experience that they are valued simply because of the role they play in our organization's success?

At Investors in People, Indicator 5 – Recognizing and Rewarding People reminds us that meaningful recognition is more than a leadership gesture. It is a leadership practice that helps create workplaces where people do not just perform. They feel valued, supported, and able to thrive.

Looking Back on a Meaningful Milestone

We're taking a moment to look back at the Investors in People conferment of Pangasinan State University on July 14, 2026 where we celebrated their commitment to building a workplace that truly invests in its people.

Accreditations and conferments are certainly milestones worth celebrating, but they also represent something much deeper. They recognize the consistent work organizations do behind the scenes to create environments where people can grow, contribute, and thrive.

Congratulations once again to Pangasinan State University and all nine of its campuses. It was our privilege to present each campus with its own Investors in People plaque in recognition of this remarkable achievement.

Thank you for being part of the Investors in People community and for demonstrating what it means to put people at the heart of organizational success.
