: No matter how busy DMCI Group Founder Engr. David M. Consunji was with his construction business, he always made it a point to come home for lunch and dinner.

He cherished these moments with his family, knowing how comforting it was for a child to be with their parents.

Engr. Consunji's dedication to his building projects, both on and off the job site, was unwavering. Yet, he never let it overshadow his commitment to his family.

Having grown up in a family where parents were always present to care for and teach the children, Engr. Consunji and his wife, Fredy, both resolved to be a constant presence in their children's lives.

During summer, he would often bring his children to the job site, eager to show them what he did and teach them a thing or two about the construction process.
This was his way of making his family a part of his work and his work, a part of his family.

He is a devoted parent who never imposed his wishes or will on his children, believing that a parent should let the child be free to find his or her place in this world.

Salute to all amazing dads working in the construction industry! Happy Father's Day!

: Engr. David M. Consunji, known as the "Builder of Landmarks" and the "Grandfather of the Philippine Construction Industry," began his career in the late 1940s with a second-hand one-bagger Jaeger concrete mixer.
He bought it for P500 in Gagalangin, Tondo, and spent P200 more refurbishing and fitting it with an engine, totaling P700.
A prominent builder later offered P3,500 for the mixer—five times what he had spent. Though tempted, Engr. Consunji did not sell.
In his memoir, "A Passion to Build," Engr. Consunji reflected on this decision as a defining moment.
He realized that selling the mixer for a quick profit wasn't aligned with his true passion for building. He saw the mixer as essential to his craft, akin to a musician's instrument.
Refusing the offer, Engr. Consunji prioritized his long-term vision over immediate gain, which ultimately laid the foundation for his construction company, DMCI.
"That mixer would serve me faithfully for several decades. In a very real sense, that P700 cement mixer was the foundation of my company, DMCI, which is considerably larger now than it was in the 1950s. It was my first major expense as a builder and the P700 l used to buy and refurbish that cement mixer was derived in part from money I had saved up for over 17 years, ever since I was a child, saved up from various allowances, and even money I had earned from a small poultry business I had when I was only 10 years old.
I think we only stopped using the mixer sometime in the late 1980s. Whatever the margin being offered to me by that prominent builder, that cement mixer has more than repaid me a million times, affirming the correctness of my decision to keep it.
This was one of those moments that I knew building was not about making money but putting up structures, making buildings, real things that brought real benefits to other people.
That was where I derived my real satisfaction in construction. Of course, I was never intent on losing money in construction; I did my best to make a reasonable profit. But making money is not the happiness I sought; I was not really a businessman but a builder, first and foremost."

: The Church of the Holy Sacrifice, popularly known as the UP Chapel, in UP Diliman Campus, Quezon City, was a groundbreaking construction feat in the Philippines.

The chapel–designed by Leandro Locsin, a young architect who would eventually become a National Artist–was the first structure in the country to use 3,000 psi concrete, revolutionizing structural and architectural design and setting a new standard for concrete construction.

This innovation paved the way for the construction of dozens of skyscrapers in the following years.

Fr. John P. Delaney, S.J., the first chaplain of the UP Diliman Catholic community and the spiritual advisor of the UP Student Catholic Action (UPSCA), initiated and supervised the building of the chapel, which was completed in 1955.

First Thin-Shell Concrete Dome:
The structure features the Philippines' first thin-shell concrete dome, designed by structural engineer Alfredo L. Juinio.

Engineer David M. Consunji, founder of the DMCI Group of Companies, pioneered the techniques required to mix and deliver the 3,000 psi concrete needed to build the structure.

At a time when most builders used 2,400 psi concrete, Engr. Consunji's team perfected the 3,000 psi mix, ensuring the dome's strength and durability. This involved careful selection and preparation of aggregates and a unique pouring method using old concrete mixers, and wheelbarrows, and a systematic plan for continuous and even concrete distribution.

In his memoir, “A Passion to Build,” Engr. Consunji reflects:
"In the mid-1950s, when most Filipino builders were using 1,500 psi concrete, 3,000 psi seemed unthinkable to many. There were a few using 2,400 psi, but in construction, a difference of 600 psi was a great deal. I had always wanted to try for 3,000 psi concrete; it was being done in other countries and I believed that it could be done here as well, in spite of our limitations. That was why I was experimenting with stronger kinds of concrete at around the time Fr. Delaney was trying to build a new UP Chapel. But I needed Fred Juinio to make me do it commercially, in an actual building where 3,000 psi concrete was the only way to make the design succeed.
Fred was a truly remarkable structural engineer. I know a number of engineers coming into the industry from the academe with impressive credentials. But in my opinion, he was the leader. He had a brilliant mind capable of great vision, but he also had a practical bent–a combination that is quite rare among engineers. He was both a designer and an innovator.”
