As part of the week-long celebration of Philippine National Law Week, the CPU Center for Legal Assistance, through the College of Law Clinical Legal Education Program (CLEP), conducted a classroom-based legal outreach lecture on the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006 (Republic Act No. 9344, as amended) at Carlos Lopez National High School, Bagacay, San Dionisio, Iloilo, on September 17, 2026.
Philippine National Law Week is an annual observance that promotes awareness of the law and emphasizes the importance of making legal knowledge more accessible to the public. It reminds us that the law is not confined to courtrooms and legal books which it is a tool for protecting rights, promoting justice, and strengthening communities.
The lecture focused on RA 9344, which establishes a child-sensitive juvenile justice system that recognizes that children in conflict with the law require guidance, protection, rehabilitation, and opportunities for reintegration into their families and communities. It promotes diversion, restorative justice, and the best interests of the child, while recognizing the important role of families, schools, communities, and government in preventing children from entering the justice system.
For the youth, knowing their rights and responsibilities can help them make informed choices, understand the consequences of their actions, seek proper help, and contribute to a safer and more supportive community. Legal awareness is youth empowerment.
This legal outreach was conducted in collaboration with the Iloilo Provincial Government through the Iloilo Provincial Population Office with its AlaLayi Program, bringing legal education closer to young people where learning beginsโin the classroom.
