On several occasions, while on the elevator in San Sebastian, he would always ask me "Mukhang galing ka pa sa trabaho, bata ha".
Then on to my class recitations, in Evidence and Remedial Law Review, if I fail to express my answer correctly, he will say "sige bata, kaya mo yan, parang mali ang sagot mo, pero maita tama mo rin yan". No wonder, I do the same thing to my students.
He was a father to all of us. When I heard of his untimely demise, I had to reach out to his daughter, Nina, and tell her how great a man her father was.

We are of a different breed, and you have to be proud of it—whether you pass the Bar or not. Because you are degrees ahead of those who have not completed their law courses. Be proud of yourselves. You are law graduates. Do not think about not making it in the Bar. Remember what I’ve told you? It’s a delayed success. What did I say before? Taking the Bar is a mere formality. But if you do not make it, you simply say “it’s just delay. It’s not a failure.”
It’s a delayed success. Remember that.
If you are undecided, let me advise you, take the Bar.
