“How it Was; How it Will Be” was a mixed-media installation by Moreen Austria, created in 2020, during a time when the world was brought to a standstill by COVID-19.

Set within the Art District, the installation brought together swings, wire structures, birds, and figures of children gathered on the grass. The swings stood empty, while the figures sat together at the center, surrounded by birds scattered across the ground and tangled among the structures above.

At a time when spaces for children were suddenly closed, the installation reflected on a childhood interrupted by isolation and uncertainty. It asked us to think beyond that moment—to consider how the experiences of children during the pandemic might shape the people they become and, eventually, the world they will inherit.

The installation may no longer occupy the space, but its questions remain: how was it, and how will it be?

Dominated by neutral shades, the work draws the eye toward its central figure—a woman rendered in varying tones of light and dark, reminiscent of a jester.

The figure is also encapsulated by confetti-like, vibrant strokes that stand in contrast to her muted form.

The interplay between these subdued and vivid tones gives the mural a sense of both stillness and movement, with the figure appearing to be caught somewhere between contemplation and play.

Created more than a decade ago, “Missinabox” remains a striking presence within the Art District, especially as you emerge from the tunnel-like passageways.

“Struggle” is a mural by Fred Orig, painted in 2020. His brushstrokes form figures that appear intertwined and twisted together, portraying both togetherness and struggle.

Within these figures are bright, contrasting colors—an array of greens, yellows, and neon baby blues set against an orange backdrop. As the colors gradually fade toward the top, they give way to dark, lingering strokes.

Created in the midst of an uncertain time, when COVID-19 had brought the world to a standstill, “Struggle” captures a moment defined by uncertainty, connection, and the weight of what we were collectively going through.

Years later, the mural remains—a reminder of a time when struggle was something we all shared.
