Father’s Day.This is going to be a long one, bear with me if you want to hear something from my heart to yours:
I have a beautiful daughter. I’ve always been a hard worker, but when my daughter was born, the purpose of my work evolved. It became something bigger, something transcendent. I started seeing God more often in my life. The tiredness and weariness of fighting for my family became a soothing feeling, it became a marker of sorts; every ounce of energy was well spent because it carried along with it a purpose well served.
As men, our only true choice when it comes to teaching our children is being the example. If you are not an example you must strive to become one. Your children will mimic you, they will admire you even when they are too innocent to tell whether you are the right example or not.
That is why it’s so crucial to live life to your fullest potential, it becomes even more important when you have kids. You teach them, yes, but in that process you determine that you must be better in every way so that you may teach your children what better is.
The hearts of many men have grown cold and cynical as they have experienced the cruelty and difficulty of life. For a good lot of them dreams and hopes have vanished and all that is left is a cynical, bitter, flat, boring existence on a downward spiral to hell on earth.
But let me tell you how I really feel: I do not fear life’s challenges now that I am a father. What I do fear tremendously is the dreadful day that I don’t work towards my potential and live up to the biggest possible sacrifice I could make.
Truth is the antidote to cynicism and vice. However, it’s an antidote that feels like poison when first drank. We do not want to feel the burden of facing truth when it haunts us in the shadows, but “we must drink that poison until it becomes the tonic that girdles the world around us”.
As men we must protect our families and communities, uphold values of nobility, strength, honesty, respect, professionalism, and the virtues that we wish to see in the world.
In order to teach and lead your kids you must set the example. In order to do that you must become the person you wish to see in yourself.
