The VUW Feminist Law Society is a group for law students (and anyone else!) of all genders, who are interested in feminism, gender equality, and structural oppression at Law School. We seek to be inclusive, intersectional, and aware of multiple layers of oppression. We hope to create an alternative social space for like-minded people, including those who don’t necessarily feel included in Law School culture, by having casual meet-ups, speaker events and other awesome stuff. Everybody is welcome to come along to most events; but those who are only open to women and non-binary people will be clear on the event page. We also have and will run other projects, such as bake sales, speaker events, submission/letter writing workshops, lobbying for more feminist courses/critical perspectives, advocacy for people dealing with sexism or other issues, etc etc etc. We also have a group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/105991729517366/?fref=ts

Dr. Samantha Keene is joining us at OGB for a discussion about the relationship between what gets shown on screen and real-world experiences of harm. With the UK recently criminalising material showing strangulation, and Australia considering similar bans, this issue is emerging as a contentious one with significant feminist implications.

We are so excited to announce the VUWFLS x SALIENT Feminist Writing Competition!

We are after an editorial which is a clear and engaging piece that presents your perspective or argument on an issue. The purpose of this competition is to provide a platform for students to explore gendered issues, spark critical conversations, and gain valuable practice in editorial writing.

The brief:

“Write an editorial piece about a legal, social, or political issue you are passionate about through a feminist lens”
600-800 words

This competition is open to all VUW students, and no legal knowledge or academic citations are required (although you’re welcome to include them if they suit your piece!)

There are exciting prizes up for grabs, and the winning entry and runner-up will also be published in Salient’s Week 10 edition.

We can’t wait to read your submissions!

The Royal New Zealand Ballet has kindly partnered with VUWFLS to give away TWO DOUBLE PASSES for their Winter Season Ballet. Shakti provides culturally specialist domestic/family violence intervention and prevention services for Asian, African and Middle Eastern women victims and their children in Aotearoa New Zealand. Lollipop follows the story of Molly, a young woman released from prison who struggles to regain custody of her children. When she bumps into her childhood friend Amina, the two women soon realise the potential of joining forces and take destiny into their own hands.

With exams on the horizon, we know just how important it is to take time out of our busy days to recharge.

Join us on Wednesday the 27th of May at 11am for a wellness walk along the waterfront! This is an opportunity to take a moment away from the stress of uni to get some fresh air and connect with one another.

Meet outside the VUWFLS office in OGB at 11am, where we will walk to Waitangi park and back to the Best Ugly Bagels location on Featherston Street. Attendees will receive 40% bagels and coffee - you don’t want to miss out! 🥯☕️
