The Altex 24 Hour Endurance Yacht Race is a special one for us.

We’ve been sponsoring it for a number of years, and our Litigation Partners Edward Cox and Dahl Calder have both competed in the race over time.

This year brought a mix of conditions, from strong winds through to calm early morning periods, with crews adapting as they went. It made for close racing and a full 24 hours of focus and determination.

Celebrating Hamish Gordon’s retirement

We’re celebrating the retirement of Hamish Gordon, Consultant in our Wellington Property team, after an amazing 50 years in law.

Hamish joined Gibson Sheat in 2020 when Nowland Gordon & Associates became part of our firm. He quickly became known for his calm nature, thoughtful advice, and generosity with his time, always ready to share his experience with others.

Over his five years with us, Hamish has supported clients with care and brought warmth, wisdom, and good humour to the team. He’s made a lasting impression on all of us at Gibson Sheat.

We wish Hamish a wonderful retirement with lots of family time, grandchildren, and days spent skiing, boating, cycling, and fishing. Congratulations, Hamish, on an incredible career.

According to recent research, thousands of families face uncertainty every year when someone passes away without clear instructions.

At last week’s Aging with Attitude expo in Masterton, we met people from our community, who want to take charge of their future. Many were thinking about wills, enduring powers of attorney and elder care planning, wanting to protect their independence and give their families peace of mind.

What an incredible couple of days celebrating the Gibson Sheat Legends of Wellington Sport.

This year we were proud to see Bruce Edgar, Niniwa Roberts, Bill Byrne, and Toni Jeffs inducted as our newest Legends. It was a privilege to share these moments with the inductees, their families, and the wider sporting community.

A special thank you to Nuku Ora, Te Rūnanganui o Te Āti Awa, and Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira for leading and supporting this fantastic event, and to everyone who helped bring it together. We’re proud to partner with organisations who do such awesome work to honour and preserve Wellington’s sporting history.

Our team loved being part of both the Legends and Families function on Thursday afternoon hosted at Ākau Tangi Sports Centre and the Wellington Regional Sports Awards last night.

Congratulations again to this year’s inductees. It’s always inspiring to recognise the incredible contributions of our region’s sporting greats.

We recently celebrated 35 years of Colleen Carson at Gibson Sheat and what a celebration it was! A BBQ, cocktails, and fire pit stories to honour a true office legend.

As Head Secretary in our Lower Hutt office, Colleen has trained and supported so many new staff over the years, generously sharing her wisdom, her systems know-how, and more than a few tips and tricks.

She’s also brought joy, laughter, and a little mischief to the job, from iconic costumes to unforgettable pranks, and stories that will be retold for years to come.

Colleen, thank you for being the heart of our workplace, for mentoring so many of us, and for 35 wonderful years of memories.

This job came together through the strength of our local networks. Both Gibson Sheat and Tidy Up proudly sponsor Upper Hutt Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and George is part of the BNI networking group that one of our Partners, Rhys Williams, is involved in. It is always a win when you can call on people who genuinely care about their work and their community.

George took care of everything from waterblasting and weeding to cleaning the BBQ. He left the area looking fresh and ready for our team to enjoy.

We recently had the pleasure of holding our staff mid-year function at their fantastic venue, and were lucky enough to be their very first corporate event!

Gibson Sheat Goes Pink for a Great Cause!

This morning, the team at Gibson Sheat showed up in their pink attire in support of Pink Shirt Day! We fuelled up with a delicious morning tea catered by our amazing partners, NOSH Catering + Events and Clareville Bakery.

Nosh went above and beyond with their delightful pink cupcakes – almost too beautiful to eat. While Clareville Bakery treated us to their famous custard squares – with a special pink twist, of course!

We also took the opportunity to raise some much-needed funds for the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand and shared kōrero about bullying. It was a fantastic morning filled with good company, real chat, yummy treats, and a healthy dose of pink!

The fun didn't stop there! We put our pink knowledge to the test with a themed quiz, followed by our all-time favourite, the 5 minute quiz.

A big shout out to Nosh and Clareville Bakery for their amazing catering, and to everyone who participated in making Pink Shirt Day at Gibson Sheat such a success!

Congratulations to Storm Mckenna on her well deserved promotion to Senior Solicitor!

Storm has been a shining star at Gibson Sheat since joining us as a law clerk in our Masterton office in August 2020. Originally a Wairarapa local and Wairarapa College graduate (head girl, no less!), Storm went on to graduate with an LLB and BCom majoring in Accounting from Victoria University in 2019. Admitted to the bar in September 2020, Storm's impressive legal ability and commercial savvy were evident from the start.

In 2023, Storm transferred to our Wellington office to further her career, where she has continued to impress with her work ethic, dedication, and strong client relationships.

Today, we celebrated Storm's achievement with cake at morning tea. In true Storm fashion, she insisted on baking her own celebratory treat – and what a treat it was! This professional looking tiramisu cake wasn't just delicious, it was a work of art. Storm, your talented in so many ways and we're so lucky to have you as part of the Gibson Sheat team.

From Logan Blathwayt in 1998 to Gibson Sheat today, Rebecca Upward has seen the evolution of Wairarapa legal services. Mergers and transformations rolled by, but one thing remained constant: Rebecca's dedication, sharp expertise, and her can do attitude.

More than just a colleague, Rebecca's commitment, quick wit, and genuine warmth have earned her the cherished title of "friend" among colleagues. We celebrated her remarkable 25 year journey with a spread of delicious local treats from Clareville Bakery, shared with our Masterton office team. It was a fitting tribute to her enduring spirit, loyalty and the positive impact she leaves on everyone around her.

Donna Watt, Rebecca's Team Leader, who leads the Masterton Estates and Elder Care Team, gave a touching speech. She reminded us of Rebecca's invaluable contributions over the past 25 years.
