Immigration New Zealand has announced key changes to student visa settings, effective from 27 October 2026. Here is what you need to know:

• Master’s-by-Research Work Rights: Unlimited work rights have been removed. All Master’s students are now aligned with standard settings (up to 25 hours a week during study, full-time during holidays).

• Visa Extensions: For most students, visa validity after a course ends is being extended from 1 month to 2 months, giving you more time to plan your next steps.

• English Language Ability: Immigration officers can now request evidence of English proficiency (like an approved test) if there are concerns.

• Provider Compliance: Visa processing can be suspended while an education provider is being investigated for non-compliance.

New Zealand Immigration has confirmed that NZeTA travel from Australia will continue without interruption while the current trial is evaluated.

Even though the initial 12-month trial period wraps up on 3 November 2026, there are no immediate changes.

Eligible travellers can keep requesting their NZeTA and flying as normal while next steps are decided.

We received confirmation from the client on Friday, reviewed the case immediately, worked through the weekend, and submitted the Section 61 request by Sunday night! 🌙

🎉 Now, we have a POSITIVE OUTCOME -AIP! 🙌💚

⚠️ An S61 request asks INZ to consider granting a visa as a special exception after someone becomes unlawful in New Zealand. This isn't a standard visa application, and the decision is entirely discretionary.

Effective today, 20 October 2026, Immigration New Zealand has expanded settings for specific, time-bound work and business purposes:

• Business Visitors: Settings are expanded to cover additional business visitor activities.

• Specialist Services: Specific Purpose Work Visas now extend to Contractual Service Suppliers and Independent Professionals.

• Capped Places (International/Humanitarian): Updates apply to capped programs. Applications will only be accepted if places are available; otherwise, they will be declined and fees refunded.

The India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement is officially in effect as of
20 October 2026, bringing exciting new visa opportunities expanded rights:

• New TEE Visa Pathways: Introducing two new Temporary Employment Entry categories for highly skilled individuals and professions iconic to India. This is capped at 5,000 visa holders at any one time, with most slots aligned to the Green List.

• Expanded Post-Study Work Rights: Starting 16 November 2026, Indian PhD graduates will see their post-study work visas extended from 3 years to up to 4 years.

• Guaranteed In-Study Work Rights: The agreement secures a commitment allowing Indian students to work at least 20 hours per week while studying.

• New Working Holiday Scheme: Coming within the next 2 years, a new scheme capped at 1,000 places annually will let Indian citizens aged 18–30 spend up to 12 months in New Zealand.
