Purple Giraffe can provide:
- Urgent/same day deadline (time frame of digital dictation to be discussed).
- Flexibility in the time frames for your non-urgent work to be completed eg: 24 hour turn around, three days etc (to be discussed).
- We have experienced transcriptionists who are available to help with our workload.
- We are a digital dictation and DVD only service and do not transcribe from mini cassettes.
- Proofreading of your document before it is returned to you (if required by you).
- We work with sound files for digital dictation in the following formats: au, dss, mp3, wav and wma.

Hands up if you remember having to rewind one of these!

Before digital recordings, cloud storage and instant playback, there were cassette tapes, dictaphones and the occasional battle with a tangled tape! And who remembers having to rewind to find that one sentence you needed to hear again?

Recording technology has certainly come a long way, and so has the way we transcribe it.

When the quick AI transcription turns into a bigger job than expected…

We’re seeing more and more clients come to Purple Giraffe with transcripts they've generated using AI, only to discover they're not quite as accurate as they'd hoped. Missing words. Incorrect names. Sentences that make absolutely no sense. And sometimes, entire sections that AI has confidently made up!

What was supposed to be a quick, cheap solution suddenly needs a human to go through it, listen to the original recording and put things right. And that's where the difference becomes obvious.

AI hears words and makes predictions. A professional human transcriptionist listens, understands context, checks terminology, identifies speakers and knows when something doesn't sound right. This matters particularly with medical reports, legal proceedings and interviews, where one incorrect word can completely change the meaning.

When accuracy matters, there's still no substitute for an experienced human ear. Sometimes the shortcut ends up being the long way around!

After years of transcribing recordings, we reckon we deserves a dictionary of our own!

Here are a few words we would start with:

🟣 Mumblezone (noun):
That section of audio where everybody suddenly forgets how microphones work.

🟣 Rewinditis (noun):
The condition of listening to the same four seconds seven times, convinced it'll make sense on the eighth.

🟣 Speaker soup (noun):
Four people talking at once, each apparently having a different conversation.

🟣 Coffeecophony (noun):
The sound of someone stirring their coffee directly beside the microphone.

🟣 Whisperstorm (noun):
When someone says the most important part of their sentence at approximately 2% volume.

🟣 Mysteryvoice (noun):
The unidentified person who suddenly joins a meeting halfway through and never introduces themselves.

Um. Like. Basically. Literally. Obviously. You know.

We all have that ONE word we say far more often than we realise!

And if there's one thing transcriptionists become very aware of, it's filler words. When you're listening to recordings all day, you start noticing just how often these little words sneak into everyday conversations.

But we are curious… which filler word are you guilty of using the most?

You’d be amazed what a microphone manages to pick up during a recording.

Things we hear all the time:

🟣 The enthusiastic keyboard tapper
🟣 The coffee slurper
🟣 The teaspoon that hits the mug approximately 47 times
🟣 The dog who suddenly has VERY important news
🟣 The constant paper rustler
🟣 The door that apparently needs to be slammed shut
🟣 …and that mysterious background noise nobody noticed at the time.

Microphones can be surprisingly sensitive. And when you’re trying to turn a recording into an accurate transcript, all those little sounds can make the actual conversation harder to hear.

You don’t need a professional recording studio, but a quiet room, microphones positioned close to the speakers and a little awareness of background noise can make a big difference.

Although we’ll always forgive the dog.

Our Word of the Month for October is Integrity.

The word comes from the Latin integer, meaning whole or complete, and we think there’s something rather fitting about that.

Integrity is about doing things properly, even when no one is watching. Taking care with the details. Being consistent. Following through on what you say you’ll do. In transcription, that matters.

Our clients trust us with important, and often confidential, information, so accuracy, reliability and care aren’t simply nice to have. They’re part of doing the job properly.

It is a quiet word, but an important one.
