"AI transcription is free.” But... you've spent three hours fixing it.

We see it all the time. Someone uploads an audio file to an AI transcription tool, gets a transcript back, and thinks the hard part is done. Then they start reading.

❌ Names are wrong.
❌ Technical terms are wrong.
❌ Punctuation is missing.
❌ Speakers are mixed up.
❌ Entire sentences make no sense.

Before long, they're listening to the whole recording again, stopping, rewinding, checking, correcting, and wondering why they didn't just get it done properly in the first place.

The reality is that a transcript is only useful if it's accurate.

Whether it's an interview, research project, life story, investigation, meeting, or legal recording, mistakes can create confusion, frustration, and extra work. That's why many people end up sending their AI-generated transcript to Purple Giraffe to be cleaned up by a real human.

The question is… If a human needs to fix it anyway, why not start with a human in the first place?

If you need a transcript you can actually trust, get in touch with the team at Purple Giraffe.

How many important stories have been lost simply because nobody wrote them down?

The stories your grandparents told around the dinner table. The memories behind old family photos. The interviews that captured someone's experiences and knowledge. The community projects that brought people together.

Every day, valuable stories, memories, and conversations risk disappearing forever.

Once a voice is gone, those details can be surprisingly easy to lose. That's why preserving spoken words matters. Whether it's a family history, a life story, research interviews, or an oral history project, capturing those conversations can create something future generations can learn from and treasure.

What's one story in your family that deserves to be preserved?

What's the oldest recording you have tucked away somewhere?

📣 A cassette tape in a drawer?
📣 A Dictaphone recording from years ago?
📣 An interview on VHS?
📣 An old family story recorded by a parent, grandparent, or relative?

Many of us have recordings stored away that haven't been listened to in years. They capture voices, memories, stories, experiences, and moments in time that can never be recreated.

What many people don't realise is that these recordings can often be transcribed into written documents, making them easier to preserve, share with family members, research, publish, or simply keep safe for future generations. Imagine being able to read the stories your grandparents told, revisit an old interview, or preserve a piece of family history before the recording deteriorates or the technology to play it disappears.

So what's the oldest recording you have stored away, and what format is it on?

Our word of the month for June is Context.

Context reminds us that words don’t exist on their own. Tone, situation, and background all matter. The word comes from the Latin contexere, meaning “to weave together”.

It’s often used in legal, medical, and professional settings where meaning can change depending on how something is said or when. A subtle nod to understanding the bigger picture, not just the words themselves.

Now you know!

You can do your own transcription. Just like you can do your own bookkeeping, marketing, or admin.
The question is… should you?

You can tell a lot about a person by the way they speak.

The pauses. The enthusiasm. The nervousness. The storytelling. The random tangents. That’s why transcription isn’t ‘just typing’ words. Context matters too. Especially in interviews, life stories, investigations, legal conversations, and sensitive discussions where meaning can completely change depending on tone or wording. Sometimes the smallest detail is the most important part of the whole conversation.

With more than 17 years of experience, Purple Giraffe knows what to listen for. If you need accurate, human transcription you can actually trust, get in touch with Purple Giraffe today.

Things people don’t realise affect transcription quality:

• A noisy café in the background
• People talking over each other
• Someone tapping a pen near the microphone
• Strong accents
• Fast speakers
• Poor internet audio on Zoom calls
• The person who sits miles away from the microphone

A recording might sound “fine” when you listen casually, but transcription hears everything. It’s one of those jobs that looks simple until you actually try doing it yourself.

We have some tips to help you achieve better quality recordings, which will mean a faster turnaround of your transcription. Check the link in the comments below.

AI transcription sounds like a great idea, until you actually read the transcript.

Missing words. Wrong names. Sentences that make absolutely no sense. And somehow your “meeting notes” now read like complete gibberish.

We are seeing more and more people come to Purple Giraffe after using AI transcription tools, asking us to fix the errors, tidy the formatting, identify speakers properly, and turn the transcript into something actually usable.

In industries like legal, medical, investigations, research, and interviews, accuracy matters. Context matters. Human understanding matters. That’s why real human transcription still makes such a difference.

We don’t just hear words. We understand conversations, accents, terminology, interruptions, tone, and the meaning behind what’s being said.

Sometimes the quickest and least frustrating option is getting it done properly the first time.

Have you ever noticed how differently people speak compared to how they read on paper?

We naturally pause, repeat ourselves, change direction halfway through a sentence, and fill gaps with “um”, “ah”, and “you know”. That’s completely normal in conversation. But when spoken words become a transcript, those little habits suddenly matter. Too much editing, and the meaning or personality can disappear. Too little, and the transcript becomes difficult to follow.

That’s where experience really makes a difference. With almost 20 years in transcription, Purple Giraffe understands how to turn real conversations into transcripts that are clear, professional, and true to the original recording.

If you’ve got audio that needs to become something usable, we’re always happy to help.

Most people think transcription is just board meetings, reports, or corporate recordings. But some projects are far more personal.

Recently, we had the privilege of transcribing recorded interviews with an iconic New Zealand figure, helping preserve stories, memories, experiences, and a lifetime of work in written form.

That’s one of the things we love most about what we do. Every recording tells a story, and not all of them happen in an office boardroom. From life stories and interviews to documentaries, research projects, podcasts, legal matters, medical dictation, and everything in between, professional transcription can play an important role in preserving conversations that matter.

A huge thank you to Barbara for the lovely testimonial and for trusting Purple Giraffe with something so meaningful.
