Smith? Smyth? Smithe? Better check the spelling on that one.
Some words are easy to hear. Others need a little more detective work. Names, place names and specialist terminology can all sound perfectly clear in a recording, but that doesn’t mean the spelling is obvious. And when you’re working with medical, legal or research material, getting it “close enough” isn’t good enough. That might mean checking context, researching terminology or confirming whether the person mentioned is a Smith, Smyth or Smithe.
It’s one of those small parts of transcription that takes judgement, not just good hearing.
