Purple Giraffe can provide:
- Urgent/same day deadline (time frame of digital dictation to be discussed).
- Flexibility in the time frames for your non-urgent work to be completed eg: 24 hour turn around, three days etc (to be discussed).
- We have experienced transcriptionists who are available to help with our workload.
- We are a digital dictation and DVD only service and do not transcribe from mini cassettes.
- Proofreading of your document before it is returned to you (if required by you).
- We work with sound files for digital dictation in the following formats: au, dss, mp3, wav and wma.

Smith? Smyth? Smithe? Better check the spelling on that one.

Some words are easy to hear. Others need a little more detective work. Names, place names and specialist terminology can all sound perfectly clear in a recording, but that doesn’t mean the spelling is obvious. And when you’re working with medical, legal or research material, getting it “close enough” isn’t good enough. That might mean checking context, researching terminology or confirming whether the person mentioned is a Smith, Smyth or Smithe.

It’s one of those small parts of transcription that takes judgement, not just good hearing.

Our Word of the Month for September is Articulate.

It comes from the Latin articulare, meaning “to divide into joints”, which gives the word its sense of structure, connection and flow.

Today, we use articulate to describe speech that is clear and ideas that are expressed well. And that makes it a particularly fitting word for transcription.

Spoken thoughts don’t always arrive neatly packaged. There can be pauses, changes of direction and ideas that develop as someone speaks. A well-prepared transcript helps turn those spoken words into clear, readable written content, while keeping the original meaning intact.

Clear words. Clear meaning. Clearly articulated.

A transcript doesn’t just type itself.

A finished transcript might look simple. The work behind it usually isn’t.

The finished document might look simple, but there’s a lot happening behind the scenes before it reaches you.

Fast transcription is useful. But accurate transcription is essential.

Sure, AI can produce a transcript quickly. But here’s the question: who notices when the transcript doesn’t quite add up? Humans.

A human transcriptionist doesn’t simply accept the first version of what they hear. They stop. Rewind. Listen again. Check names, terminology and unfamiliar phrases. They notice when a sentence doesn’t make sense in context and take the time to work out why. They can also pick up inconsistencies, identify speakers more carefully, follow specific formatting requirements and flag anything that genuinely can’t be confirmed.

AI can be useful technology, but it doesn’t bring the same level of judgement or responsibility to the finished document. And when that transcript is going into a medical file, legal matter, investigation, research project or important business record, that extra layer of human checking matters.

Sometimes the real value of a transcriptionist isn’t just knowing what was said. It’s knowing when something needs a second listen.
