📣Changes to open work visas from April 2026

Immigration New Zealand is introducing clearer employment conditions for open work visas from April 2026. The changes support clear and consistent visa conditions support safer, fairer, and more compliant work practices for both migrants and employers.

Open work visas will now have one of two conditions:
✅ Some allow any work, including self‑employment.
✅ Others require work for an employer.

On any open work visa, visa holders cannot employ other people. These changes do not apply to AEWV holders.

✨ Exciting Changes Ahead for Skilled Migrant Residence Pathways – Coming Mid-2026 ✨

The New Zealand Government has announced two new residence pathways designed to make it easier for businesses to retain skilled workers and for migrants with crucial expertise to secure residence.

🛠️ What’s New?
1️⃣ Skilled Work Experience Pathway – For migrants with 5+ years of directly relevant experience, including 2 years in NZ at 1.1x the median wage.
2️⃣ Trades and Technician Pathway – For migrants with a Level 4+ qualification and 4+ years post-qualification experience, including 18 months in NZ at or above the median wage.

🎯 Why It Matters
These changes will:
🔹 Help businesses fill skill shortages.
🔹 Recognise and reward practical, industry-relevant experience.
🔹 Retain talented graduates by reducing work experience requirements for those with NZ qualifications.

This is a significant step in creating a smarter, more flexible immigration system that benefits both businesses and skilled professionals.
