📚 More study pathways just opened up under the Pathway Student Visa.

From 20 July, the PSV will cover study pathways at NZQCF Levels 1–4, which include:

√ English language study
√ Foundation programmes
√ Vocational certificates

Before, the PSV mostly suited students with a clear, higher-level study plan already mapped out.

Now there's flexibility for students starting lower and working their way up without switching visas every time they move to the next course.

🎒 Calling all Years 12 & 13 students planning to study in NZ!

One of the biggest changes to the Pathway Student Visa makes things easier for secondary school students. From 20 July, you won't need to name your exact tertiary course when you apply.

Instead, you'll just need to confirm:
✅ the qualification level you're planning to study and
✅ Which education provider do you intend to study with

That's a much more realistic way to plan. Not many 16-year-olds know exactly what degree they want two years out. This gives students room to figure it out as they go, without needing a whole new visa application.

📋 IT'S OFFICIAL: Immigration New Zealand has confirmed the final details on all SMC changes and they take effect on 24 August 2026.

Here are the 6 final changes to New Zealand's Skilled Migrant Category:

① Wage Threshold Simplified
Most SMC applicants will only need to meet ONE wage threshold — the rate in effect when they started accruing skilled work experience. A 5-month grace period also applies.

② Qualification Evidence Updated
Level 8 or Level 9 applicants must now also hold and provide evidence a supporting bachelor's degree. Points for bachelor's degrees increase from 3 to 4.

③ Overseas Trades Qualification — 120-Credit Rule Removed
Overseas Trade and Technician qualifications only need an IQA confirming Level 4 or higher. The 120-credit requirement no longer applies.

④ NZ Trades Qualification — 120 Credits, Flexible
New Zealand trade qualifications still require 120 credits, but credits can now be stacked across multiple qualifications where prerequisites apply.

⑤ Self-Employment Ruled Out
Evidence of self-employment cannot be used to meet work experience requirements under either the Trades & Technician or Skilled Work Experience pathways.

⑥ Genuine Employment — Clearer Definition
Job offers must be available, ongoing and have a genuine need to be based in New Zealand aligned with the AEWV standard.

🏢 JOB OFFER CHECK: New Zealand has updated the definition of genuine employment and every skilled residence visa applicant needs to know what that means for them.

From the hospitals of Waitematā Health in Auckland to the tech companies of Tauranga's growing innovation hub, skilled migrants power New Zealand's economy. But Immigration New Zealand is now making it crystal clear: your job offer must be the real deal, not just on paper.

Updated immigration instructions now define genuine employment with greater precision across ALL skilled residence visas, including:

✅ SMC Resident Visa
✅ Work to Residence Visa
✅ Straight to Residence Visa

Here's exactly what "genuine employment" now requires:

✅ The job offer must be available and ongoing — a real role that currently exists, is actively open and will continue beyond your visa application process
✅ There must be a genuine need for the role to be based in New Zealand — positions that can be performed remotely from overseas will not qualify under this definition
✅ The new standard broadly aligns with the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) genuine employment definition — creating a consistent benchmark across skilled visa categories
✅ For the majority of applicants — zero impact. If your employment is real, ongoing and NZ-based, this clarification changes nothing for you
✅ The update gives INZ clearer legal grounds to decline applications where there are strong concerns that the employment arrangement is not legitimate

📌 Think of it like a Kiwi employer at a Fieldays job expo in Hamilton, they're looking for workers who will genuinely show up, do the work and add real value.

A job that exists only to satisfy visa requirements doesn't meet that standard — and now INZ can say so with greater clarity.

🥗 Whether you're a registered nurse in Palmerston North, an IT specialist in Wellington's Cuba Street tech district or an accountant in Christchurch's business hub. If your job is genuine, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
