UrgentCity

UrgentCity UrgentCity - by Generations and Cities - aims at creating a vocabulary of terms to understand contemporary urban challenges. We are all citizens.

Urgent City is a project by New Generations and Amateur Cities. Its aim is to create a common understanding of terms that are crucial for discussing the contemporary urban challenges and finding ways to fight and prevent them in the future. Cities as an urban habitat offer a lot of opportunities, but they are not free from flaws and threats. They face many challenges on grounds, such as: environme

nt, economy, technology, society and many more. These challenges should concern us all, because they can have an enormous influence on the way we live. To tackle them, however, we first need to understand them no matter if we are scientists, designers, florists, lawyers, community workers or doctors.

"When one of Donald Trump’s closest aids coined the term ‘alternative facts’ there was uproar. But, the reality could, indeed, be more complex". Take a look at what Philip Seargeant wrote about the truth, ‘alternative facts’ and the way language is always subject to change.

Sales of George Orwell’s 1984 have apparently surged since Kellyanne Conway introduced the phrase “alternative facts” into public discourse.

Is the collective a new way of living or an old one, commodified? Here what Matthew Stewart has to say about it, on Failed Architecture.

Sold to Generation Yers as “curated communities”, London's The Collective Old Oak is a pricey copy of 1930s modernist projects, stripped of their social agendas.

Can gentrification can be predicted by tweets?: "By combining social media data – indicating a more affluent visitor to an area – with statistics on rising house prices and dropping crime rates, the computer science researchers were able to show a link with gentrification. The researchers identified four key factors for working out social diversity. Brokerage, the likelihood of someone visiting an area alone or with friends; serendipity, the likelihood of people visiting a place; entropy, the diversity of visitors and the homogeneity of an area and its visitors". writes Matt Burgess. Take a look at the full article on WIRED and check out what researchers at Cambridge University discovered by looking at tweets and Foursquare check-ins.
