💊 Flagyl (Metronidazole): Know What You’re Taking
Flagyl, also known by its generic name Metronidazole, is one of the most commonly used antimicrobial drugs in Nigeria. It belongs to the nitroimidazole class of antibiotics and is effective against a wide range of anaerobic bacteria and protozoa (organisms that live without oxygen).
⚗️ Active Ingredient (API)
Each tablet of Flagyl contains Metronidazole as the active pharmaceutical ingredient. It may also be available in suspension, infusion, and vaginal gel forms, depending on the infection being treated.
⚙️ Mechanism of Action
Metronidazole works by entering the cells of bacteria or protozoa, where it undergoes a chemical reduction process.
This reaction produces toxic compounds that bind to and break the DNA of the microorganisms.
As a result, the microbes lose their ability to multiply and survive — leading to their death and the clearance of infection.
🔬 Pharmacology
Absorption: Well absorbed when taken orally.
Distribution: Widely distributed to tissues and body fluids, including saliva, breast milk, and cerebrospinal fluid.
Metabolism: Mainly metabolized in the liver.
Excretion: Eliminated mostly through urine (which may appear dark or reddish-brown).
⚡ Potency and Efficacy
Metronidazole is highly potent against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa such as Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and Trichomonas vaginalis.
Its efficacy is excellent when used correctly; however, misuse or incomplete dosage can lead to drug resistance and treatment failure.
🩺 Indications (Therapeutic Uses)
Amoebic dysentery (bloody stool due to E. histolytica)
Giardiasis
Trichomoniasis (vaginal infection)
Bacterial vaginosis
Dental and gum infections
Pelvic inflammatory disease
Infections after surgery caused by anaerobic bacteria
🚫 Contraindications
Flagyl should not be used in:
Patients with a known allergy to Metronidazole
The first trimester of pregnancy (unless absolutely necessary)
People consuming alcohol or alcohol-containing products (may cause severe nausea, vomiting, flushing, and headache — disulfiram reaction)
⚠️ Side Effects
Metallic taste in the mouth
Nausea, vomiting, or stomach upset
Dark or reddish urine (harmless)
Headache or dizziness
Numbness or tingling in hands and feet with long-term use
💡
Flagyl is a powerful and essential antimicrobial medicine in Nigeria.
However, it should never be used for every stomach pain or diarrhea without medical advice.
Wrong use leads to resistance, side effects, and treatment failure.
👉 Always consult your pharmacist or doctor before using any antibiotic.
