‎The Young Surveyors Network (YSN), Rivers State Branch, successfully held the Start Conference on Tuesday, 5th November 2025, at the NIS Secretariat, Port Harcourt. The event, which commenced at exactly 10:00 AM, had the theme “Digital Transformation: Exploring Cutting-Edge Geospatial Technologies and Artificial Intelligence Integration, Prospects and Challenges.”

‎The conference began with an opening prayer, followed by welcome remarks and the introduction of dignitaries. The event witnessed the presence of several esteemed personalities, including the Surveyor General of Rivers State, Sir Peter Ogolo, and distinguished Fellows of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors such as Dr. Irene, Dr. Ekundayo, and other notable professionals within the surveying and geospatial community.

‎Dr. Inemi Stephen delivered a lecture on Project Management, highlighting modern approaches to efficiency and collaboration in the digital era.

‎Surv. Dr. Stanley Eke spoke on “The Surveyor’s Seal: Upholding Professional Integrity and Public Trust in Geospatial Practice,” emphasizing the ethical responsibilities of professionals in maintaining the credibility of the surveying profession.

‎The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Rivers State Branch, the professional regulatory body for surveyors, was well represented by its Chairman, Surv. Baridi S. Legbara, alongside members of the State Executive Council, who lent their full support to the program.

‎As part of the Network’s vision for human capacity development and mentorship, several students from various boys’ and girls’ secondary schools across Rivers State attended the event. REPORT ON THE ONGOING YOUNG SURVEYORS NETWORK (YSN), NIGERIA RIVERS STATE BRANCH EVENT

The Young Surveyors Network, Nigeria Rivers State Branch, held its maiden edition of the Harvest of Ideas (HOI) 2025 on the 5th of November, 2025, at the Surveyors House, Obirikwere, Port Harcourt. The event marked a significant milestone in the professional development of young surveyors within the state and across Nigeria.

The conference, themed “Digital Transformation: Exploring Cutting-Edge Geospatial Technologies, Artificial Intelligence Integration, Prospects and Challenges,” brought together distinguished professionals, mentors, and young surveyors to discuss innovations shaping the surveying and geospatial industry.

🧭 EVOLUTION OF SURVEYING: FROM ROPES TO SATELLITES

1. Ancient Era (Before 500 AD)

Surveying began in Egypt, Babylon, and Rome — used for land division, taxation, and construction. Tools included ropes, plumb bobs, and the Groma. Egyptians used it to redraw boundaries after the Nile floods.

2. Medieval Period (500–1600 AD)

Techniques improved with the use of the compass, plane table, and astrolabe. Focus shifted to mapping land ownership and planning military defenses.

3. Renaissance to Industrial Age (1600–1900 AD)

Mathematics and science advanced surveying. Instruments like the theodolite and chain improved precision. Major projects such as roads, canals, and railways relied on survey data.

4. 20th Century

The age of technology — aerial photography, EDM, and total stations transformed fieldwork. Computers and CAD software introduced digital mapping and data analysis.

WHO SHOULD HEAD A LARGE CONSTRUCTION PROJECT?

Many people assume that once you have land and a drawing, the next step is simply to start building. But on large projects worth millions, the real question is not “Who can build?” but rather “Who should lead the entire team of professionals to deliver the project successfully?”

Let’s break it down:

Architect – Designs the project, ensures aesthetics, space functionality, and compliance with standards.

Civil/Structural Engineer – Designs the structure, ensures stability and safety of the building.

Quantity Surveyor (QS) – Handles costs, contracts, and makes sure the project stays financially healthy.

Builder – Specializes in construction management, quality control, and translating drawings into physical structures.

Now, here’s the truth: no single professional can singlehandedly “own” a large project. That’s why the industry recognizes the role of a Project Manager.

A Project Manager could be an Architect, Builder, Civil Engineer, or Quantity Surveyor — depending on their training and additional project management expertise.

If the project is design-heavy → the Architect may lead.

If it’s structurally complex → the Civil Engineer could take charge.

If it’s construction execution-focused → the Builder often leads.

If it’s finance and contracts-driven → the Quantity Surveyor can be the best fit.

But in modern practice, especially on large projects, the Project Manager is often a Builder or Quantity Surveyor with additional project management certification (like PMP or PRINCE2), because they combine technical knowledge with cost, time, and resource management skills.

Bottom line:
The project leader is not automatically chosen by profession but by who has the best project management training and experience. On paper, the Quantity Surveyor and Builder are the two professions most tailored to manage big projects from start to finish.
