Seeking Justice: Expert Advice on Making Police Reports
A disturbing trend on social media has caught my attention: a victim seeking justice was mistreated at a police station while attempting to file a complaint. As a concerned professional, I'd like to share essential advice on how to navigate the process of making a police report.
Before You Go:
1. Document everything: Write down the details of the incident, including dates, times, locations, and the parties involved. Do not skip any vital information because you don’t know how far the matter will go.
2. Gather evidence: Collect any relevant evidence, such as documents, photographs, or witness statements. If you sustained any injury, snap them as evidence. Evidence is the backbone of litigation.
3. Consult a Lawyer: A lawyer will prepare a concise petition on your behalf using the details provided by you. He/she will also guide you on how to make your statement at the police station and give facts that will help your case.
At the Police Station:
1. Be calm and assertive: Approach the officer in charge with confidence and respect.
2. Know your rights: Familiarize yourself with the Nigerian Constitution and the Police Act to understand your rights and obligations. That way, no police officer will bully you into making statements that will not be in your favour.
3. Insist on a written statement: Ensure your complaint is documented in writing and insist on writing it yourself. Don’t allow any officer to force words into your head or make you admit to an offence by yelling at you. Be smart!
4. Get the officer's details: Note the officer's name, badge number, and contact information. They may not agree to give you this information but make sure you’re observant enough to note them.
Please note that your Lawyer should be present when you’re making any statement at the station. When your Lawyer is speaking, do not interrupt because he is doing so in your best interest.
Remember, seeking justice can be challenging, but knowing your rights and being prepared can make a significant difference.
