The Real Reason Courts in Imo State ask :Igbo Or English?
If you have ever been in Court in Imo State, you must have heard this question; Will you speak in English or Igbo? but most people don't know why this particular question is asked each time.
This question is a very important one,and it protects your right to fair hearing.
It is not just an ordinary question and under section 36 of the 1999 constitution, everyone deserves the right to fair hearing, and this hearing means speaking and hearing you in a language you will understand ..
It will not be fair to bring someone to Court and suddenly start speaking French,or Tiv Language to them, when you know that we are in Imo State, where most People speak either English or Igbo ,or both.
The Person brought before a law court, who is either giving evidence or being questioned must understand what the Court is saying in order to defend themselves properly.
The Court asks "Igbo or English" so you can choose the language you are most comfortable with.
If you choose Igbo, the Court Clerk will interpret for you at no added cost ...Yes,even if you are at Mbaise Customary Court,or Umuoba Customary Court,or Orogwe or even Imo State High court, and you choose Igbo as your preferred language, the court clerk will interpret it.
You will get a chance to speak your language very well, and believe me, Lawyers will even be willing to learn one or two.
I was in court one day,and the man giving evidence, who elected to speak in Igbo Language started with one adage that I have not heard before, and many lawyers there were very impressed.
Another time in Court, a man elected to speak in English, and he could not even get through, because he didn't understand well, and probably wanted to impress someone with his "I want to be heard in English".
We had to literally Tell him to choose a language he is comfortable with.
If you choose English, the case will proceed in English,if you choose Igbo, same.
Choose carefully because Justice only works if you understand what's happening, and can defend yourself.
Remember that they will also Cross examine you,and if you choose a language you don't understand well, you may actually start biting your tongue during the Cross Examination stage, and your opponent will now have the upper hand.
A wrong translation or misunderstanding can change the outcome of a case.
So when next you hear ,Igbo Ka Bekee?...Know that it is there to protect your right to be heard.
What you understand,you can defend.
