Is it proper to call a female judge “Ma” in court?

In Nigerian courts, decorum is not just about respect—it is about uniformity and tradition.
When addressing a judge, whether male or female, the proper form of address is “My Lord” or “Your Lordship” in superior courts, and “Your Worship” in magistrate courts.
Calling a female judge “Ma” may sound respectful in everyday conversation, but in the courtroom, it is incorrect and discouraged. Courtroom address is not based on gender—it is based on judicial office and established legal tradition.
In fact, even female judges are addressed as:
“My Lord” (High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court)
“Your Worship” (Magistrate Court)
Not “Ma.”
Why? Because the title reflects the authority of the court, not the gender of the person occupying the bench.
Using “Ma” can come across as:
Informal
Unprofessional
A lack of proper courtroom training
So, if you want to sound learned and composed in court, stick to the proper forms.
