A few months ago, someone I know lost over €1,000 to fraudsters posing as a legitimate travel and immigration agency.
They promised a European work visa, collected the payment, and then disappeared. Calls went unanswered. Messages were ignored. The dream quickly became a painful lesson.
Now before you say, "Nigerians" and Scam are 5&6, these are not Nigerians.
Disappointingly, they're all foreign nationals, claiming to be based in Melbourne,Australia. In due time, I'll be posting their pictures here.
Sadly, this isn't an isolated story.
As someone working in the global mobility and immigration space, I've learned that while there are genuine opportunities abroad, there are also individuals and organizations that prey on people desperate for a better future.
Before you pay anyone for a work visa or immigration service, take a moment to protect yourself.
Here are 5 things you should always do:
✔ Verify the agency's registration and business credentials.
✔ Confirm the job offer directly with the employer, where possible.
✔ Never make large upfront payments without a verifiable agreement.
✔ Research reviews, references, and the agency's online reputation.
✔ Be cautious of promises like "guaranteed visa approval" or unrealistic processing timelines.
Your dream of working abroad is worth pursuing but, it's also worth protecting.
Staying informed, Asking questions, Verifying every claim before making any financial commitment, is not you doing too much!
Leave nothing to assumptions and Never feel pressured or gaslighted to make any financial commitments.
