Today is World IP Day and I want to take a moment to tell you why this day, beyond the hashtags and the celebration actually matters to you personally.
World Intellectual Property Day was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to be observed every year on April 26.
The goal is simple: raise awareness about the role that intellectual property plays in encouraging innovation and creativity.
But hereās what that means at ground level.
It means that somewhere in Nigeria right now, thereās an entrepreneur who has built an incredible brand but has no trademark.
Thereās a musician whose songs have been sampled without permission or payment.
Thereās a software developer whose code has been copied and sold.
Thereās a fashion designer whose prints are being replicated by fast fashion brands.
These are not statistics. These are real people. And in many cases, they donāt know their rights or they know their rights but donāt know where to start.
Thatās what World IP Day is really about.
Itās a reminder that intellectual property isnāt just for multinationals and big corporations. It is for every creator.
Every founder.
Every innovator.
Every artist.
It is for YOU.
So Today, I want you to do one thing. Just one.
Identify something you have created, a brand name, a product, a piece of content, a design and ask yourself honestly: is this protected?
If the answer is no, or Iām not sure, thatās where I come in.
DM us. Send us āIPā in our inbox. We are doing free IP consultations today in honour of April 26.
Happy World IP Day. Now go protect your genius.
