When disagreements arise, social media opinions rarely determine the outcome.

Courts interpret documents.

If you’re building with friends or family, now is the time to put your legal house in order not after the relationship has broken down.

Have you documented your founder relationship beyond a WhatsApp conversation?

Let’s talk👇🏼

August is here, and if there’s one business decision I hope every founder makes this month, it’s this:

Stop involving your lawyer only after something has gone wrong.

The founders who get the greatest value from legal support don’t wait until they’re facing a dispute, a failed partnership, an unhappy investor, or an employment issue.

Sometimes, all it takes is a 10-minute legal conversation to prevent months or even years of costly legal disputes, unnecessary expenses, and avoidable business setbacks.

That is what having your startup lawyer on speed dial looks like.

As we step into August, my prayer for every founder is that you build a business that is not only profitable but also legally protected, investor-ready, and built to last.

Don’t wait for a legal problem before seeking legal advice.

DM me the word “RETAINER” and I’ll show you how ongoing legal support works for your type of startup, so you can focus on building while I help you manage the legal risks behind the scenes.

Happy New Month, founders. Let’s build wisely this August. 🚀

A founder recently said something along these lines after a clarity session.

My response?

That’s exactly why you needed the clarity session in the first place.

One of the biggest misconceptions startup founders have is believing that a Co-founders’ Agreement comes before the conversation.
It doesn’t.

The conversation comes first.

The legal document simply captures the decisions you’ve already made.

Before any lawyer drafts your Co-founders’ Agreement, founders should already have difficult conversations about:

✅ Who brought the idea?
✅ Who is investing money?
✅ Who is building the product?
✅ Who is driving growth and sales?
✅ What happens if one founder leaves?
✅ Should everyone own equal shares?
✅ How will future investors affect today’s ownership?
✅ Will founders receive salaries or only equity?
✅ Who makes the final decisions when disagreements arise?

These are business decisions with legal consequences.

A good startup lawyer doesn’t just draft documents.

We ask the uncomfortable questions that founders often avoid until it’s too late.

Because once equity is allocated incorrectly, fixing it later can be expensive, emotionally draining, and sometimes impossible.

Too many startups fail because founders rushed to register a company without first aligning on ownership, expectations, responsibilities, and long-term vision.

The paperwork is never the starting point.

The conversation is.

And once there is consensus, that’s when the law steps in to protect everyone involved.

If you’re building a startup with one or more co-founders, don’t wait until there’s a disagreement before seeking legal guidance.

The best time to structure your partnership is when everyone is still excited—not when relationships begin to break down

Everywhere you look today...

AI-generated flyers.

AI-cloned videos.

AI-generated voices.

AI-generated faces.

And while it’s fascinating to watch technology evolve, I can’t help but ask...

At what point do we draw the line?

As a Startup and Intellectual Property Lawyer, my concern isn’t that AI exists.

My concern is what happens when we lose the human touch that makes brands authentic, creators unique, and innovation truly original.

If every brand looks the same...
If every flyer sounds the same...
If every video feels the same...

Are we still creating...
or are we simply cloning?

Then there’s the legal side.

Who owns AI-generated content?

When does inspiration become infringement?

Who is liable when an AI clone misrepresents a person or a business?

These are questions founders, creators, marketers, and lawyers can no longer ignore.

I’m not against AI

I use AI.

But AI should enhance human creativity—not replace originality, authenticity, and responsible innovation.

Because technology moves fast...
but the law, ethics, and public trust still matter.

Meanwhile join me today at the Practical Hybrid AI Governance, Risk & Compliance Workshop, organized by the NBA-SBL NBA Section on Business Law (NBA/SBL).

Let’s have the conversations that every business should be having before AI makes the decisions for us.

See you there.
