Power naturally resists restraint. That is why Rule of Law exists—to limit excess and
protect society from arbitrariness.
This is the first test of any government.

Day 3:
Democracy cannot survive without Rule of Law. Elections without accountability are
rituals, not governance.
This distinction matters for constitutional stability.

Nigeria goes through elections. Votes are cast. Winners are announced.

But after the elections:

judgments are ignored.

are selectively applied.

people act without consequences.

What do we really have?

Democracy is not just about voting every four years. Elections are only the entry point. What sustains democracy is accountability under the Rule of Law.

When leaders are elected but not accountable to the law, democracy becomes a ceremony—loud, colourful, but hollow.

True democracy means:

obey court orders.

are respected.

apply equally to everyone.

Lesson:
Voting is important, but demanding accountability after elections is even more important. Democracy does not end at the ballot box.

Day 1:
Rule of Law is not a slogan. It is a discipline that ensures laws govern power, not personal discretion.

This principle underpins every constitutional system.

Imagine this situation.

A government official wakes up one morning and decides that a rule should no longer apply—simply because it is inconvenient. No court order is sought. No law is amended. The official just “directs” that things should be done differently.

Some people clap. Others keep quiet.

This is exactly why the Rule of Law exists.

Rule of Law means that power does not act by mood, anger, popularity, or personal opinion. It means leaders and institutions are disciplined by law, even when the law is uncomfortable.

In a society governed by Rule of Law:

1. Decisions are based on written laws

2. Disputes are resolved by courts

3. Authority is exercised within limits

Without this discipline, society is ruled by individuals, not laws.

Lesson:
When laws stop guiding power, citizens become vulnerable. Today, it may affect someone else. Tomorrow, it may be you.

NBA Gombe Branch Strengthens Partnership with Gombe State University Faculty of Law
Gombe, Nigeria – September 24, 2025

The Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Gombe Branch, paid a courtesy visit to the Faculty of Law, Gombe State University, to strengthen collaboration in training, mentoring, and nurturing the next generation of lawyers.

The visit, hosted by the Dean and principal officers of the Faculty, focused on building sustainable structures that will equip law students with the skills, ethics, and exposure required for 21st-century legal practice.

Speaking during the visit, the NBA Gombe Branch Chairman emphasized the Association’s commitment to partnership: “Strengthening ethics and mentorship at the formative stage will guarantee a more professional Bar in the years ahead. Our goal is to work closely with the Faculty to raise a generation of lawyers who are not only skilled but also ethically grounded,” he said.

Key Areas of Deliberation

a. Professional Ethics: Both parties underscored the importance of upholding high ethical standards. They acknowledged that adherence to the spirit and letter of professional ethics is waning in today’s fast-changing legal landscape and agreed on the need for collective efforts to reinforce compliance among students and members.
b. Mentorship: Discussions centered on structured mentorship opportunities, including internships, the creation of NBA Section-based student clubs (SBL, SLP, and SPIDEL) to aid participation in conferences, and platforms that will expose students to real-life cases and experiences essential for modern legal practice.
c. Continuing Professional Development (CPD): The NBA and the Faculty agreed on the importance of continuous learning through workshops, seminars, and scholarly publications, which will serve as avenues for training, retraining, and academic advancement.
d. Law Clinic Sustainability: Both parties reaffirmed the importance of strengthening the Faculty’s Law Clinic as a practical training ground where students can manage real cases, sharpen their advocacy skills, and deliver legal solutions to community challenges.
e. Pro Bono Services: The NBA reiterated its resolve to enhance pro bono legal services for indigent persons, women, and children—especially through the Office of the Vice Chairman—as part of its responsibility to extend access to justice to vulnerable groups in the State.
f. Advocacy for Legal Academics: The Association also pledged to advocate for the welfare and professional development of its members in academia, recognizing their crucial role in shaping future practitioners.

In response, the Dean of the Faculty of Law expressed appreciation for the visit and assured the Association of the Faculty’s commitment to sustaining collaborative initiatives.
“Our students stand to benefit immensely from these interventions. We look forward to working together with the NBA to ensure our graduates are industry-ready and ethically grounded,” she noted.

A Shared Vision for the Future
The courtesy visit reaffirmed the shared vision of the NBA Gombe Branch and the Faculty of Law, Gombe State University, to nurture competent, ethical, and socially responsible lawyers. Both institutions committed to working together to create an enabling environment for legal education, mentorship, and access to justice.
