๐„๐„๐’๐€๐–๐Œ๐€ Aligns with State Directive as "Operation Keep Eket Clean" Gains Momentum

The Eket Local Government Environmental Sanitation, Waste Management and Recycling Authority (EESAWMA) has formally announced its commitment to the implementation of the newly introduced mandatory monthly environmental sanitation policy of the Akwa Ibom State Government.

The policy, recently unveiled by the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA), Obong Prince Ikim, stipulates that every last Saturday of the month shall be observed as a Statewide Environmental Sanitation Exercise with full restriction of movement across the State.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman of EESAWMA, Amb. Richy Udoka, described the directive as a welcome and progressive policy that will strengthen environmental governance, improve public hygiene, promote civic responsibility, and accelerate the collective effort towards achieving a cleaner Akwa Ibom State.

According to him, Eket Local Government is fully prepared to align with the State Government's renewed environmental agenda through the ongoing "Operation Keep Eket Clean" programme.

The Eket Local Government Environmental Sanitation, Waste Management and Recycling Authority wholeheartedly welcomes and supports the directive of the Akwa Ibom State Government under the leadership of AKSEPWMA Chairman, Obong Prince Ikim, mandating every last Saturday of the month as a Statewide Environmental Sanitation Exercise with restriction of movement.

This directive is in line with our existing environmental reform programme, Operation Keep Eket Clean, which was initiated by the Executive Chairman of Eket Local Government Council, Rt. Hon. Akaniyene Tommey, as part of his administration's commitment and promise to make Eket the cleanest Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State.

The Chairman further explained that Operation Keep Eket Clean is being implemented through the collaborative efforts of EESAWMA and the Eket GreenTown Environmental Initiative, a strategic environmental platform established to drive public sensitization, community participation, waste management reforms, environmental advocacy, and sustainable sanitation practices across Eket Local Government Area.

He noted that the initiative is already yielding positive results through environmental awareness campaigns, drain clearance exercises, waste evacuation operations, market sanitation activities, community clean-up exercises, and the implementation of the Zonal Waste Collection System.

According to him:

"Environmental sanitation is not merely a monthly exercise. It is a civic duty and a shared responsibility. A clean environment promotes public health, prevents flooding, reduces environmental hazards, attracts investment opportunities, and improves the quality of life of our people.

We therefore call on all residents of Eket Local Government to embrace this renewed environmental culture by participating fully in every sanitation exercise and maintaining cleanliness beyond the sanitatio hours.

The Authority urged residents, landlords, tenants, market traders, transport operators, business owners, institutions, religious organizations, youth groups, and community leaders to actively participate in the sanitation exercise by:

- Cleaning their homes and surroundings.

- Clearing gutters and drainage channels.

- Removing overgrown weeds and environmental nuisances.

- Ensuring proper storage and disposal of waste.

- Avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

- Refraining from open burning of waste.

- Owning standard waste bins.

- Registering with approved Waste Service Providers operating within their designated zones.

The Chairman emphasized that the success of the State Government's sanitation policy will depend largely on public cooperation and compliance.

He further assured residents that EESAWMA will intensify environmental education, monitoring, inspection, and enforcement activities across all communities within Eket Local Government Area to ensure the effective implementation of the directive.

The vision of Rt. Hon. Akaniyene Tommey is clearโ€”to make Eket the cleanest, healthiest, and most environmentally responsible Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State. Through Operation Keep Eket Clean and the support of the people, that vision is achievable.

We therefore urge all residents to support this initiative, obey sanitation regulations, and join hands with Government in building a cleaner and healthier Eket for present and future generations.

EESAWMA reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and pledged continued collaboration with AKSEPWMA, community stakeholders, environmental partners, and residents in advancing the environmental transformation agenda of Akwa Ibom State.

OPERATION KEEP EKET CLEAN

An Initiative of Rt. Hon. Akaniyene Tommey, Executive Chairman, Eket Local Government Council

Implemented through EESAWMA and the Eket GreenTown Environmental Initiative.

Through my journey in environmental advocacy, I have learned one powerful truth: nobody starts as a legend.

Every movement that now inspires people once started with uncertainty, criticism, sacrifice, and very little support. There were days the vision looked too small to matter, days when the work felt unseen, and moments when people doubted whether change was even possible.

But consistency has a way of giving a voice to purpose.

One thing I discovered along the way is that fear destroys more dreams than failure ever will. Many people are not lacking talent or potential; they are simply trapped inside the fear of rejection, mockery, or starting small.

That is why you must never allow society to place limits on your vision. Burn the script that tells you to stay comfortable. Tear down the mindset that says you should wait for perfect conditions before taking action.

The world may ignore your beginning, but that does not mean your journey lacks value.

Real impact is built quietly โ€” through sacrifice, discipline, resilience, and the willingness to continue even when nobody applauds you.

In the environmental movement, I have seen that meaningful change does not happen overnight. It takes courage to keep showing up. It takes vision to keep believing. And it takes character to keep working when the results are not yet visible.

The people remembered tomorrow are often the people who were underestimated today.

So this week, I encourage every young person reading this:

Trust your vision.
Unlock your potential.
Move with purpose.
Do not be afraid to start small.

Because every great name was once unknown, and every lasting legacy began with someone who refused to quit.

One day, the same world that questioned your journey may speak your name with honor because you chose courage over fear and purpose over comfort.

Hope Alive.
Taking Actionโ€ฆ Getting Results.

In line with the Eket Local Govt Council commitment to environmental responsibility and public health, the Eket Local Government Environmental Sanitation, Waste Management and Recycling Authority (EESAWMA) has announced the official commencement of the Eket Zonal Waste Collection System, effective 1st April, 2026.

This initiative marks a major step in the ongoing Environmental Revolution aimed at tackling indiscriminate waste disposal and promoting a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Eket.

Under this new system, Eket Local Government Area has been strategically divided into designated zones, with each zone assigned a Private Waste Service (PWS) Provider to ensure efficient and regular waste collection.

The Authority calls on the general public to adhere on the following Directives:

All households, businesses, and institutions must provide standard waste bins with fitted covers.

Residents and property owners are required to register with their assigned waste service provider.

The use of unauthorized waste collectors is strictly prohibited.

Indiscriminate dumping of waste in drainages, roadsides, and open spaces is an offence and will attract penalties.

The Authority will begin monitoring and enforcement immediately, with regular inspections of houses to ensure compliance. This initiative is backed by existing environmental laws and regulations of Eket Local Government, and defaulters will be prosecuted accordingly.

This is a call to responsibility for all residents and stakeholders. Moving forward, we must take ownership of our environment and support government efforts for a cleaner and safer Eket.

Let us join hands to build the Eket we all desire.

The activity was held in conjunction with the schoolโ€™s ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ” Inter-House Sports Festival, aligning with broader national and state-level efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainability by empowering young women as future environmental stewards

Richy Udoka , who also serves as Chairman of the Eket Environmental Authority under the administration of Rt. Hon. Mr. Akaniyene Tommey, Executive Chairman of Eket Local Government Area, inspired the students with his vision. โ€œOne tree planted is a future secured,โ€ he stated. The environmental boss further encouraged the students, saying โ€œToday, you are not just planting treesโ€”you are planting hope, responsibility, and a greener tomorrow for Eket and beyond.โ€

The event emphasized hands-on participation, with students actively involved in planting saplings and learning sustainable nurturing practices. Udoka stressed that the effort goes beyond greening the school compoundโ€”it is about nurturing a generation of eco-conscious leaders who will carry forward the mantle of environmental care.

This local activity echoes wider governmental campaigns, such as the upcoming *2026 Tree Planting Campaign* by the Eket Local Government, which will be officially flagged off on *June 5th*โ€”World Environment Dayโ€”by the Council Chairman, Hon. Akaniyene Tommey. The campaign aims to mobilize collective action to promote FORESTATION and protect the environment against DEGRADATION while promoting sustainable ecological growth.

The Eket GreenTown Initiative seeks to foster community ownership, encouraging residents, schools, and local organizations to join in expanding green cover and promoting ecological resilience. โ€œWe are sowing seeds of change with these young girls,โ€ Udoka remarked. โ€œTogether, we are growing a greener, brighter Eketโ€”one sapling, one steward at a time.โ€

The Eket GreenTown Initiative invites partnerships and volunteers to scale up tree planting and environmental education across the community.
