South African businesses are entering Europe - but many get stuck before they even start.

Not because the opportunity isn’t there.
But because the structure behind their expansion is wrong from day one.

This April, in Johannesburg and Cape Town, adv. Ernestas Šapalas, co-founder of IN IURE Law Firm, will be meeting business owners who are considering Europe as their next step.

In practice, most EU expansion strategies fall into two very different directions:

→ Entering the EU through distribution and logistics
Building the right partner network and a structure that supports real sales across the European market.

→ Establishing a satellite office in Europe
Creating a compliant, cost-efficient operational base that allows the business to work with EU clients and scale within the Single Market.

These are not interchangeable decisions.
Each requires a different legal and business framework.

A company can be registered in a few days.
A structure that actually works takes much longer to think through.

If Europe is on your roadmap - even as a future direction - this is the right moment to have a structured, in-person conversation in South Africa.

In one recent case, eleven members of one family from South Africa reinstated Lithuanian citizenship.

For one of them, it later led to representing Lithuania on the national rugby team.

During a visit to South Africa, adv. Dainius Ambrazaitis met with the family.

That initial discussion helped clarify eligibility, the required documents, and the next steps. From there, the process developed into a coordinated effort across countries, eventually leading to citizenship being restored.

But for Jake, it did not end there.

After receiving Lithuanian citizenship, he reached out to the Lithuanian Rugby Federation. That step led to training with the team, and eventually, to representing Lithuania in an international match.

This is often how these cases begin – with a question that becomes clearer once discussed.

In April, adv. Dainius Ambrazaitis will be in South Africa and available for in-person consultations.

If you are considering Lithuanian citizenship by descent, or are already in the process and would like clarity on your situation, this is an opportunity to speak directly.

🇱🇹 Many people delay exploring Lithuanian citizenship simply because they are unsure whether their case would qualify.
In practice, uncertainty is one of the most common starting points - not a limitation.

This April, adv. Dainius Ambrazaitis from IN IURE Law Firm will be in South Africa offering free individual consultations on Lithuanian citizenship by descent.

These meetings are designed to give you a clear, structured understanding of your situation - based on legal assessment, not assumptions.

📌 During the consultation, you will understand:
• Whether your ancestry may qualify
• What can be done if documents are missing
• How the process works in practice
• What your realistic next steps are

At IN IURE, we often see that what seems uncertain at first becomes clear once properly assessed.
If this question has been in the background for some time, this is a good moment to address it.

“My DNA test says I have Lithuanian ancestors. Does that make me eligible?”

It feels logical. DNA seems precise, scientific, and connected to something real.

But citizenship does not work that way.

It is encouraging to see a growing interest in ancestry, particularly when it leads individuals to identify Lithuanian roots through DNA testing.

But Lithuanian citizenship is a legal status – not a cultural or genetic one. DNA can show ancestry, but it does not show whether a specific ancestor held Lithuanian citizenship. Eligibility depends on documented legal facts.

DNA may start the journey, but legal evidence decides the outcome.

In citizenship cases, one date can determine everything. In this case, it changed the entire outcome.

At first, Joanne’s case seemed straightforward – eligibility was expected through her grandfather.

But there was a catch.

He had left Lithuania before 1918, and it started to look like the case might not succeed after all.

Instead of giving up, Joanne decided to look deeper.

That’s when another branch of her family history was uncovered.
Her grandmother had left Lithuania in 1921 – and that changed everything.

What seemed like a dead end turned into success – not just for Joanne, but for four members of her family.

Sometimes, what’s legally yours is simply hidden deeper in your family history.

In many Lithuanian citizenship cases, one historical moment can change everything, and for many families, that moment is 1918.

A Lithuanian surname, family stories, or genealogical records often feel like a clear starting point.

But in practice, the outcome often depends on something more specific.

For many families, everything comes down to one detail, whether their ancestors left Lithuania before or after 1918.
This is where expectations and legal reality begin to differ.
The connection to Lithuania may be clear, but citizenship eligibility is assessed within a historical and legal framework that follows its own logic.

Understanding this moment in time is often what turns uncertainty into clarity.

In our latest article, we explain how this works in practice and what it means for those exploring Lithuanian citizenship.

Every citizenship reinstatement case carries its own context. Joshua’s was shaped by a family history that led back to Lithuania before World War II.

Before turning to us, Joshua had already tried to move the process forward independently. When the Migration Department reviewed the file, certain documentation issues were raised. What seemed straightforward at first required a more careful legal assessment. Although substantial genealogical research had already been conducted, the case required precise legal argumentation, structured evidence, and formal representation.

The solution involved reviewing archival records, clarifying historical timelines, and addressing the Migration Department’s concerns within the legal framework governing Lithuanian citizenship by descent.

Finally Joshua’s Lithuanian citizenship was reinstated.
This case illustrates a common reality – citizenship restoration is not only about family history, but about how that history aligns with specific legal criteria.

12/02/2026

A common belief is that dual citizenship is not allowed in Lithuania.

Lithuanian law does allow dual citizenship.

What is true is that it is not automatic or universal. It is permitted in specific situations defined by the Law on Citizenship – typically connected to historical circumstances such as departure before 11 March 1990, exile or forced displacement, or citizenship acquired at birth.

In some cases, eligibility may also extend to children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

So the real question is not whether Lithuania allows dual citizenship.

The real question is whether a particular personal or family history falls within one of the legally defined categories. Because each case is assessed within a specific category, identifying the right one from the beginning helps keep the process clear and structured.

Clarity from the start matters.

We’ve explained this distinction – and how the law approaches dual citizenship – in our latest article.

How long does it really take to reinstate Lithuanian citizenship?

While every case is different, most applications are completed within 14–16 months - from the start of document research to the final decision by the Lithuanian Migration Department.

The timeline depends on several factors: document availability, legal preparation, and the government review period. Understanding these stages early helps avoid unnecessary stress and delays.

We’ve explained the reinstatement process step by step, including what affects timing and what applicants should realistically expect.
