Honoring Liberia’s New Judicial Leadership: Chief Justice Gbeisay & Associate Justice Boakai Kanneh
1. A New Era Begins
On June 30, 2025, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai nominated Associate Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay to serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, following the constitutional retirement of Chief Justice Sie‑A‑Nyene Yuoh. The president urged the Senate to confirm the nomination swiftly, praising Gbeisay as a jurist of exemplary integrity and unwavering commitment to the rule of law and the Constitution.
Shortly thereafter, on July 17, 2025, President Boakai nominated Cllr. Boakai N. Kanneh, chairman of Liberia’s Law Reform Commission, as Associate Justice-designate. Kanneh’s nomination filled the vacancy left by Gbeisay’s elevation and was lauded for his extensive experience as a scholar, public servant, and legal reform advocate.
2. Confirmation & Seating
The Liberian Senate confirmed both nominees: Gbeisay as Chief Justice and Kanneh as Associate Justice.
Their official seating took place on August 20, 2025, during a formal Supreme Court special session, marking the beginning of their judicial tenure.
The appointments of Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay as Chief Justice and Boakai N. Kanneh as Associate Justice mark a significant moment for Liberia’s judiciary. Their seating heralds a renewed focus on judicial integrity, accountability, and institutional reform—at a time when public trust and court independence are more crucial than ever.
