🇦🇺MAJOR VISA CHANGES ANNOUNCED

TODAY, Minister Tony Burke’s speech outlined major proposed changes to who can arrive, stay and leave Australia:

✈️ VISITOR / TOURIST VISAS
Future visas would carry a “No Further Stay” condition, restricting applications for other visas while in Australia. Protection applications would remain an exception. Existing visitors already here would not be affected.

🎓 STUDENT VISAS — FURTHER STUDY AT A HIGHER LEVEL
After completing a course, further study would need to be at a higher qualification level—for example, bachelor’s to master’s. Genuine course transfers and legitimate extensions would still be allowed.

👨‍👩‍👧 STUDENT & GRADUATE VISA FAMILIES
New applicants would generally lose the ability to include family members, with exceptions for certain countries and courses, including PhDs. Families already attached to visas and in Australia would not be separated.

🔨 SKILLED MIGRATION -— POINTS TEST CHANGES
The points test would change, with housing construction trades receiving qualification points equivalent to university qualifications. Processing priorities would include construction, agriculture, fisheries, resources and teaching.

⏩ PRIORITY VISA PROCESSING
Processing priorities would be updated to include:
* Construction
* Agriculture
* Fisheries
* Resources
* Teaching

🎒 WORKING HOLIDAY VISAS
Proposed ballots would limit:
* Second-year places to 45,000
* Third-year places to 5,000

Regional work requirements would remain, but completing the work would only qualify applicants for the ballot. UK arrangements are treated separately in the speech.

🛡️ PROTECTION CLAIMS
Measures targeting non-genuine claims would require legislation. Genuine asylum claims would remain part of the protection system.

⚖️ MIGRATION AGENTS & OVERSTAYERS
Agents encouraging abuse of the system could face sanctions or deregistration. Stronger enforcement would target people staying without a valid visa.

🛫 VISA OVERSTAYERS — STRONGER ENFORCEMENT
Stronger enforcement would seek to ensure people leave Australia when they no longer hold a valid visa.

This includes returning to detention and departure practices described in the speech as operating before 2015.

Your agent should let you see your visa application in ImmiAccount so you can check:

👉 Your name, date of birth and passport details
👉 What type of visa was applied for
👉 The status of your application
👉 If your biometrics letter matches your visa application
👉 Any messages or updates from the Australian Government
